A refurbed Compaq...

Another member has been building older AMD machines for a collection of all the amd cpu's, and a member said they'd like to see what he could do with a socket 775.

Instead of hijacking his thread, I made this one to show an old Compaq I refurbed then actually DOWNGRADED some to try to win the lowest spot on the CPUz benchmark test a while back(didn't make it).

Here's some pics and a brief description of what I did.

Screenshot_1 & _2 shows the original upgrade to the C2D E4700 while shot _4 shows the test results after switching to the Pentium E2160

The OEM cpu was a Celeron 430,a 1 core cpu at 1.8 GHz

I replaced the 2 sticks of 512Mb ram with 2 sticks of 2Gb ram and added a 1Gb Radeon Hd 8490 OEM video card to give it discrete graphics that would work halfway good.

The OS is now Windows 10.

The Tape closing off part of the grills on the side panel is so the air gets pulled from the from across the board and out the back from the rectangular opening and not just from the square opening right over the cpu area.

Hey, I think I know who you're talking about!  :wheee:

Nice find!  Looks like an Intel 945g motherboard.  I wonder if you can 771 Xeon mod that board?  I know it was possible on later Intel boards like the 965p, p35, and p45 boards.  Probably doesn't take a quad core either way though, I think you need 965p or better for quads IIRC (been a while).

THAT rig, not even kidding, paired with something like a 750Ti or something like that, would make a phenomenal retro gaming rig with like XP on it or something.  You can have quite a bit of fun for stupid cheap with something like that. 🙂

I have a 750ti that I tried in it and it kept crashing on boot. I think it was drawing too much from the pci-e (it only has a 250 power supply and I'm not sure what the pci-e supplies on this board.(yes it's a 945g, no it won't do a quad 771)

lol, I use to keep a thread on ocn for the 771 bios mods.🙂 That was what got me into playing with these things.

Noice !

I love the 'older' stuff...and for K/Ubuntu, it really doesn't matter anyways.

No kidding!!!!???  Dude, you were a legend for keeping that thread going!  That 771 mod is what got me into 775 setups.  🤣  That picture I posted in the other thread (not trying to threadjack either)........that water cooled HTPC 771 Xeon build was inspired by your thread!

No,NO! I was inspired ALSO by the original "[MOD] LGA775 Support For LGA771 Xeon CPUs" thread on OCN and made a separate thread that was devoted to the modded bios for the rigs.

XEON Microcodes added to Socket 775 bios <---- Roughly a hundred modded bios collected in 1 thread. 🙂

The 771 mod was what got me into all this and why I made an OCN account. 🙂 I made friends there and followed some here and brought a couple with me. lol

Pretty sure I borrowed a BIOS or two, but either way that's a neat blast from the past regardless. 😄
