Mark individual threads as "Read"?

I truly enjoy reading everyone's content and try to at least skim over every unread thread as it comes up. However, with all the recent activity, the unread messages are becoming heavy. If possible, could there be a checkmark or some sort of button that would appear next to every message in the "Unread Content" viewer to avoid having to go into every thread individually or without marking the entire site as "Read"?

Actually, I would assume that if you want to mark it as read does it disappear from the list until updated again...or never appear again at all ?
