Taking A Look Around

Hi,

I thought I would take a look around since I've noticed a few OCN members have been talking about this place.  I've been building my own PCs since the early 90's.  Been reading PC hardware review websites since the late 90's.  It's all about gaining and sharing knowledge.  I haven't built myself a new computer since 2011-12 (i7-3770k, Asus Z77 Maximus V Extreme, Plextor PX-256M3P SSD, Corsair Obsidian 800D, Corsair H100 Extreme), but have built many for family and friends the last 10 years.

 

I'm thinking it's finally time to build a new machine.  Not sure what to get.  I have been getting into video editing and need something much faster.  I bought a Fractal Design Define 7 XL on sale in January.  Where to go from there...

Welcome with us  I would says your best bet is an Amd Ryzen 7000 build  Anything is an upgrade from your 3770k

Slippery slope mate.  I joined EHW in 2021 with a 3770k.  Upgraded to a Ryzen 3600, then a 5800x, and now eying the 7700x. -_-

 

Honestly, going with either Intel or AMD at this point would certainly be an upgrade.  I can't wrap my head around the difference on the cores with modern Intel, so I prefer to stay away from that.  My AMD machines have been treating me pretty well though.

--- I built a 3770 K / Z77 Maximus V Extreme back in late 2012 (still have all the bits). That was also the first CPU I ever delidded (razor blade in those days, with blood splatter) and applied liquid metal to...accidental LM droplets 'skillfully placed' between mobo traces. It could (can) run up to 5.2 giggles on water. But that was then, these days, hardware is a lot more capable and much easier to handle.

 

As @bonami2 suggested above, an AMD AM5 setup might be a fairly good bet as it is a fairly new socket, while Intel's competing LG 1700 is expected to be replaced soon. For video editing, there are also the much more expensive HEDT platforms (Threadripper / Pro and the like), but  these days, it may make more sense to get an AM5 Ryzen (12c/24t or 16c/32t), some fast large-capacity NVME and other storage. I would spend the rest on the latest and biggest GPU that fits your budget...FYI, on video editing, OBS Studio now has support for the RTX 4090 dual AV1 encoders. I use that card and 24 GB of GDDR6X is highly useful there...beyond that is the RTX 6000 Ada w/ 48 GB of regular GDDR6 (for more than double the $s) Lots of options for you in a slowing market.

Wow, long time on a single rig! The 3770K was quite a CPU though. Not sure which video editor you use - I use HitFilm and recently Davinci Resolve. I have benchmarked HitFilm quite a bit, Ryzen 1000,2000,3000,5000, 12th gen i5 and my Ryzen 7700X. Your editing program can and will have as much of an impact on the system you build though, for example, I finsh Davinci Resolve to be quite a bit more efficient when it comes to resource utilization. There's definitely been a benefit in both scrubbing performance and total rendering time with newer CPUs and GPUs and newer PCie NVMe SSDs. Do you create videos for fun or for $? Between that and your budget will somewhat guide you in your build strategy. I'd definitely suggest starting by looking at the Ryzen 7000 series or 12th/13th gen platform if you wish to buy new. I personally edit videos on my Ryzen 3900XT and an RTX 3060 12gb with 32gb of 3600 CL16 memory. For my purposes, this system works quite well.

I do a little bit of everything videos wise.  Nothing professional, yet.

 

My main concern is to build a stable machine that I don't have to fiddle with.  Intel seems to be the way to go with that.  I have a Lenovo laptop that has an AMD CPU and it has its gremlins (random restarts, screen flicker).  Doesn't happen very often, but once is too much.  It was a nightmare when I first got it, then I replaced most of the AMD drivers with Windows default drivers and things got a lot better.  It's too bad, AMD makes really nice CPUs, but the software seems to be finicky.  I miss my Socket-939 computers.  AMD CPU (Athlon 64 X2) and NVIDIA chipset (nForce4 Ultra).  They were rock solid.

 

I am thinking about waiting for all the new HEDT stuff to come out.

 

I'm in no rush.
