Microsoft Tests Sticking Ads in Windows 11 Settings Menu

Microsoft is treating Windows 11 more and more like a billboard bus, finding ways to stick advertisements for its services along every surface and armpit of its operating system. In addition to ads in the Start menu, the latest test build for Windows 11 includes notices for a Microsoft 365 trial and more in the Settings menu.

GIZMODO.COM

Early Windows 11 beta features show Microsoft really wants users to try 365 and OneDrive, bombarding them with messages in the Start and Settings menus.

People absolutely should be using OneDrive and office 365.

No one would use a smart phone without back ups enabled these days, and OneDrive is that but for windows. When I have a customer who loses data because their hard drive failed and they never signed into OneDrive, I have no sympathy for them.

Office is free now via a browser. No one should be paying for office anymore, and using office plus OneDrive is a really good way to get things done.

It's sad that Microsoft has to beat people over the head with this stuff to get them to even realize it exists.

I don't see how this is anything new either, Microsoft has had Office trials in the start menu for years. This feels very much like a click bait headline.

Bing search on the xbox also has the 365 ads blowing up all over and outlook mail has it also even in W10. 😞 They've become an ad ho. The wife was reading 1 of her xbox live emails and it even had the 365 ad embedded there.

...with Google / Alphabet getting ready for a new return salvo on AI, I can certainly see Microsoft pushing their premier AI-related services for all it's worth right now - if they could, Microsoft would even print OneDrive and 365 ads on our office toilet paper....

Suffice it to say that regarding the most sensitive IP machines we have at work, it is strictly forbidden to load any Windows OS at all, and as such OneDrive or Office 365...in fact, those machines all exclusively run Linux such as Ubuntu, with Firefox for browsing, Thunderbird for email and Office Libre for productivity, all behind a BSD firewall and some secret-sauce VPN... Chat GPT 4x AI is so powerful because it did manage to get tons of toilet paper imprints - so to speak...

@J7SC_Orion With google talking about Doctor AI and many other tech they do need to drop the clutch at 16k rpm and do something before google beat them to the game.

AI will break the job market sooner or later.

Your comment that "AI will break the job market sooner or later" is dead on...think of a typical bureaucracy (whether in the private or public sector) and the sheer number of 'information transmission, evaluation and regurgitation' workers currently at hand... = toast if there is a macroeconomic trigger for it, because AI can do it better, cheaper and with far less complaints and 'middle men/women'.

Cue the Matrix:, after the item below...
