Google monopoly punishment due next August, says judge

Recommended Posts

Judge Amit P. Mehta established a timeline for the remedies phase of Google’s antirust trial during a hearing in Washington, D.C. on Friday, the outcome of which could upend how people find information on the internet. Prosecutors have until the end of the year to submit their proposals, which could take aim at Google’s billion-dollar payments to Apple in exchange for priority placement, or potentially order Google to sell off parts of its business.

I hope they are extremely hard on Google. They absolutely deserve to have the book thrown at them as hard as possible.

After the way they went after MS for IE and Windows Media Player they BETTER hit Google for doing the same thing.

They better hit more than Google. Hit 'em all.

This world (let alone the grand US of A), has gobbled up so much of industry under a giant, closed-circle, invite-only, global grift grip.  That handful of gigacorps controls so much of the world's paths to everything that it's absurd just how interconnected everything in those industries' are even beyond the financial records.

The current 'status quo' in business around the world are these gigacorps owning or controlling at levels unfathomable to most every-day persons. It's absolutely WILD how much they have a hand in, everything. And it's roughly like 1000 people around the world with the reigns.

1000 out of roughly 8+ billion. WILD.

So there is a second trial starting. Didn't realize there was more than one DOJ case against Google.

US government takes Google to court over $31 billion digital ad monopoly, trial starts today

Quote

Opening statements before District Judge Leonie Brinkema of the US District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia start later today. The BBC notes that the Justice Department plans to argue that Google's parent company, Alphabet, illegally operates a monopoly in the online advertising market. However, Alphabet denies the allegations, claiming that its success is due to the "effectiveness" of its services.

The Justice Department claims Google established its monopoly through the anti-competitive acquisitions of smaller ad-tech rivals and even bullying website publishers into using its ad products. Google is also said to have unethically controlled key businesses in each part of the advertising supply chain, thereby driving up ad rates for advertisers while reducing the payouts to website owners.

Pointing out Google's systematic abuse of the online ad business, the DoJ will ask the court to break up the company's ad-tech monopoly. The agency believes a breakup would create new opportunities for Google's smaller competitors and incentivize new players to enter the market. It will also be better for both advertisers and publishers.

1000% agreed.

Too long has the giant of the search engine realm throttled competition and hindered consumers' freedom. They've used their tremendous influence to make agreements, like with Apple, so their search engine stays the default, cementing their monopoly even further. >___>

By taking severe action against them, the court can show, whatever its size or influence, that no company is above the law. Tough penalties and remedies are needed to ensure competition is on the level again in tech companies ensuring future innovation happens.

Google's headquarters is in Canada.  Does the U.S. have the authority to break them up?

I always wondered how the CIA could get so big, they'd run away and declare their allegiance to Canada...  Google is just too big for them not to be involved.  Hold on, I better go make some tinfoil hats.

Well it is actually Mountain View California, not Canada. Although they do have offices in Canada.

While you'd be hard-pressed to find someone who doesn't have conspiracy theories about how one or all of the tech giants are in bed with US government spy agencies such as the CIA, there's no evidence that Google leans toward foreign governments. While the tinfoil hats comment lands a funny, conspiracy-theory harkening jab—the truth is that Google is such an antitrust target more for its size and influence than anything pursuant to some shadowy governmental agenda.

PRISM

please read the second paragraph where it says how the NSA spends millions of dollars in its arrangement with its "partners".

Geez - I used my phone earlier and my font is huge o_O

Anyway, you make a fair point - however, It is important to note that while the existence of the program can be proven, the idea these companies willingly or secretly collaborated with intelligence agencies, beyond their legal obligations, is more speculative. The companies have always maintained that they gave data only when it was demanded by law, not as part of any secret deal negotiated behind closed doors. In that sense, although PRISM did occur, specifics of each company's voluntary cooperation are still open to debate.
