Upgrading to Ryzen

Hey there,

 

I've been looking around for some time and I'm thinking about upgrading to an AMD 3950x.

The problem is, I have no idea if this is the right time to upgrade and what'll be a good motherboard and ram to support this processor.

I'll be using the processor for folding at home most of the time, and when I'm home I'd like to play some games.

It might be a bit overkill, but I don't mind. Budget isn't the biggest concern, as long as I'm happy with the way it does everything I ask.

The hardware will go in the "Main 7XL" rig, with watercooling on the processor.

I have the 3950x, Great CPU. It beats the 2990WX which what I had before from a general computing/gaming perspective. Granted rendering or anything core hungry will prefer a threadripper. It goes without saying that the X570 boards is where it is at for the 3950x, I can only speak from experience that the Asrock make some awesome boards on the X570 platform. My Asrock Aqua flies with this CPU. However the Asrock Taichi is a brilliant board from what I have see on reviews and from what I have gathered from speaking with those who have used it. As for RAM, Samsung B-die based RAM all day long ! I personally have the G.skill Trident Z and they are fantastic and due to the Samsung B-Die have some great OC headroom. Currently running what was a stock 3200Mhz kit at 3733 @ CL 16-17-16-34.

 

What I will say is that this CPU does run warm and expect to see sudden temp spikes, just seems to be the nature of this CPU. I would imagine looking at your current WC setup that you are going to be OK on the temp side of things.

 

I think the platform has a good amount of life in it. Forget about the upgrade path, it will last a good while before the need to upgrade again. Though the good thing is that X570 will support the 4000 series of CPU from AMD.

I've got the Asus Prime X470-Pro and X570-Pro running at home right now and they have been absolutely solid. I'm also running some Corsair Vengeance 3200 MHz kits in both systems, one as UnRaid box and other as Gaming PC.

 

I've also has many Asrock boards in the past and never had any real stability issues other then slightly more trouble getting memory overclocks, but for a production system, you would likely just buy RAM of the motherboard's QVL at the speed you want and the number of slots you want filled. Both Asrock and Asus are both really great with their QVL's and I've never had a problem using memory from those lists. Just make sure you look at the QVL for 3000 series Ryzen and not 2000 series as they are pretty different in their support for memory speeds, latencies, and number of slots.

I'm still not 100% sure what to get, work has been consuming most of my time so I didn't get a chance to figure everything out yet.

I need to get the second rig done first anyways, so I have some time to make up my mind.

And there is no reason to hurry, besides the fact that I'd like to get rid of this 7700k.. :p

Well when you are ready, we are here. I doubt much will have changed in the Ryzen landscape between now and then, aside from getting closer to the Ryzen 4000 launch.

Just to let you know, I'm running the 3950x now.
Decided to go with the ASRock X570 Taichi in combination with 32gb Tridend Z Neo.
I'm happy with how it performs, between 350k and 500k folding on 27 threads.
And even when I'm gaming, I can still run F@H on 15 threads to keep the cpu somewhat busy ?

Oh, on a side note:
The 7700k seems to be running a lot better with an AIO 360 on it.
Now I'm not sure what the reason is for that, but I see less temperature spikes and the overall temp is a lot lower.

I have never tested this, always thought it was caused by the cpu itself. Last time I cleaned the cpu block from the inside and installed it with even better thermal paste, with no luck. Now I'm wondering if the block is flat...
But who cares, that block is now a nice paperweight and the 7700k is happy with its new setup!

Nice setup bud ! That will keep you rocking for a good while. As for the 7700k, what you describe sounds like the previous cooler used maybe did not have a very flat surface and was just causing really poor contact. Glad you got that sorted too !

Oh yeah, this hardware makes me pretty happy! Looking at how much power it has, I'm pretty sure you are right. No need to upgrade in the near future ?

I've been using my 7700k for a good few years, and it never really let me down, but I just don't like hot hardware.

I actually never owned a 7700k last Intel CPU I had was the 4790k. Great CPU but then moved to AMD with Threadripper and still with AMD now on the 3950x. Gotta love Ryzen.
