AMD RX 6800 XT runs at almost half the frame rate of Nvidia's RTX 3080 in Vulkan Ray Tracing tests

AMD is just getting started at the whole ray tracing game. The AMD RX 6800 XT marks Team Radeon's very first ray tracing enabled GPU, with the power to render Microsoft DirectX Raytracing (DXR) supporting games, albeit rather slower than the Nvidia competition. But no longer is AMD restricted to Microsoft's ray tracing API as today the Khronos group, a cross-vendor supported consortium of super-smart people, has unleashed its own GPU-agnostic ray tracing extension for Vulkan.

I hope for AMD users this is a software issue and not a hardware one. I'd have expected the 6800XT to at least come close to the 3080.

The missing Tensor cores will make the difference I believe. "RDNA 2 isn’t as efficient at ray tracing as Nvidia’s second-gen technology, though. Turning on ray tracing drops frame rates by roughly 38 to 45 percent on the Radeon RX 6800-series cards, compared to 28 to 37 percent on the GeForce GPUs." "The biggest missing piece for Radeon? To be fair tho, both Nvidia and and are performing much worse with Vulkan RT vs DXR. The amd cards are worse sure but neither are performing well.

I think some of the performance loss for AMD will be down to 

 

A. New API and optimizations to be had 

B. This is AMD's first pop at RT, as such realistically we know it will not stand up to the Nvidia 3000 series.

This is AMDs first revision of RT hardware. Compare it to a 2080ti and then resubmit the results.
