...the block comes with pads and a backplate (which I will modify w/ an extra heatsink). That said, for the VRAM and parts of the VRM, I will use TG-10 thermal putty again which easily conforms to any available space. I also have a selection of various sizes of Thermalright Odyssey pads from earlier Raven builds left over (see left pic).

...a Bykski water block for the RTX 4090 Gigabyte-G-OC, along with two packs of Gelid GC Extreme for the GPU die (VRAM gets thermal putty again, phases some Thermalright pads). It's funny how small the PCBs are on the 4090s once you see it w/o those giant, heavy air coolers. I really don't want to run a card that ranges from 450W to 600W on air.

I had a back operation last month - went well, and a related biopsy came back negative (the good kind) - but I still don't like hospitals much (no offense to anyone). I had a great team for surgery, but the lab next door on the same floor had lost my blood test they took three days earlier, and general 'online/paper work' took longer than the actual operation. All is well that ends well, I suppose.

...Amazon.ca sometimes has better prices for the 5-pack P12s (bought a few there as well), though sometimes Memory Express was a bit cheaper. Anyhow, I use them in push pull on the rads with high fpi / triple cores - in push / pull even at ~ 1800 rpm, they deliver as much cooling as my old GentleTyphoon 3K rpm 'push' fans, but are much quieter As to QDs, you might find that they come in handy down the line even beyond adding a GPU block. Then again, I switch systems and parts around a fair bit, so to me, they are an 'essential'. I like those 'feet' you got from ALiExpress a lot !

I am looking forward to to this build... For fans, I seem to have developed an Arctic P12 PST PWR addiction (have over 50 of them across two loops). I buy the no-RGB cheapo 5-packs at Memory Express and/or Canada Computers, btw. For Quick disconnects, I highly recommend Koolance QD4s (pic below) - not cheap, but work great and offer low flow resistance for my 1/2 inner 3/4 outer diameter loops. I also use Koolance fittings for the tubing...QDs and fittings is not s.th. you want to go cheap on, re. potential leaks, especially with rotary-style fittings. I'm hoping to see lots of updates on your 13900K project. Per this > post last March on MSI Z690 Unify X, that was primarily for Alderlake / Adobe workstation. A bit tempted now to plug in a 13900K / 7200 Mt RAM into one of the loops mentioned above for fun - but I'll wait a bit as it would mean setting reconfiguring both the CH8 DH / 5950Xand the CH8/ 3950X into low-volume work servers and workstations, and the Alderlake wandering into another part somewhere in the office...

NVIDIA might have a problem with some RTX 4090 catching fire
J7SC_Orion replied to Mr. Fox's topic in Hardware News
...very glad I got my 4090 - Bonus: got it at entry-level pricing, and with big OC potential on top. It is not the Intel-spec connector on the card itself that is the issue, but the 4-into-1 dongle. As to said dongle, Seasonic is sending me (at no charge) a proper 12VHPWR 600W-rated single-strand designed specifically for my PSUs per approval email below. In the meantime, I will be careful (dongle has never been unduly bent, card is vertical mount). Second pic below shows my 3090 Strix... 8-pin PCIe cables were bent too much, with the resulting partial melt (arrow)...card still works great, though, once I fixed the cable paths. FYI, 4090 topics at extremehw.net have been a real eye-opener for me EDIT:- 31 replies

NVIDIA might have a problem with some RTX 4090 catching fire

Good find ! Igor's 'full dissection' vid (also performed by others, like he mentioned) really shows what the problem is - it's not at the 12VHPWR connector 'receptable' on the card side itself, but that silly final bit in the dongle where the cables are soldered to...silly is an understatement; probably more like liability-producing engineering faux pas. The solution is really as stated above, get a full dongle-free 12VHPWR cable - preferably from your specific PSU's maker, or even from a respectable custom manufacturer.- 31 replies

It is my fav application - but I also love to hate parts of it. Even in DX11 mode (instead of DX12 beta mode FS2020 has had seemingly forever) it hammers one CPU core particularly hard for most of the session; not very well optimized. But the visuals are simply jaw-dropping. I highly, highly recommend FS 2020...and the next major patch (SU11, mid-November) is supposed to have a variety of generally-applicable fixes and goodies, in addition to DLSS3 for RTX4x.

...have two of the ones highlighted coming from Seasonic for my Seasonic PX PSUs, so everyone can (hopefully) sleep better at night now. I think I'm going to list my 4-into-1 adapter dongle set on the marketplace here so you folks can outbid each other in a frenzy...the money will come in handy for when the Galax HoF 4090 Ti comes out with two of the 12VHPWR connectors Now back to delicious gaming framerates on full eye candy- 31 replies

Early experiences with the RTX 4090: Jekyll & Hyde
J7SC_Orion replied to J7SC_Orion's topic in Nvidia
There are just a couple new C1s (48, 55, 65) left, marked with 'final pricing', in stores around here. I had a chance to compare the C2 & C1 side-by-side, and the former is a bit brighter but otherwise mostly the same - and even on the C1, I turn down brightness as I am surrounded by monitors fed by multiple machines in my work area...still a heck of a lot better (other than perhaps response time) than those big CRTs we used to have when I started out - those gave me a headache... -

NVIDIA might have a problem with some RTX 4090 catching fire
J7SC_Orion replied to Mr. Fox's topic in Hardware News
...it's an Intel spec, 600W per text below It also comes down to compliant PSUs, and the 'good riddance' to the short-term dongle solution during the PSU transitional phase.- 31 replies

Early experiences with the RTX 4090: Jekyll & Hyde
J7SC_Orion replied to J7SC_Orion's topic in Nvidia
...glad you liked the "Jekyll & Hyde" summary. Per the TechPowerUP graph below (4K average for ~ 40 games), the 4090s are in a league by themselves, though I expect AMD's Navi3 products to challenge, never mind subsequent NVidia products. Still, if you look at the graph below, it is a 'generational shift' in performance. For my / our purposes - taking advantage of the 4K 120 OLEDs offer, the productivity power and time savings - it made sense, even beyond some work apps. Besides, I have over 34 GPUs here (not counting really old stuff) and a new GPU purchase is a business decision as well as everything gets recycled in work-stations. The only thing I don't look forward to is the 'domino game of musical chairs', the lowest-end old GPU currently still in use is a GTX 670 (running on a database dev server, w/Microsoft default driver only). That will get bumped by a 980 - and so forth, and so on...a lot of re-configuring to do soon, and some of my staff are not thrilled...especially if I add a Navi3 or another NVidia RTX4K as well soon...at least they're happy that I don't do HWBot anymore and the mess that created ...as to 4090 pricing, this was actually 'reasonable' if you look at the intro-pricing of the 3090 Ti and custom RT3k and XT6K series at the time. Obviously, after the shortage came a glut, and these days, prices are all over the place, depending on the older model, though mostly much lower. Yet referring to the performance graph below again, there is a lot of bang for the buck w/ 4090s. ...on the issue of the power connector, they probably adapted too early (I think this may have been an Intel spec update, see spoiler below...also note 'compliant PSUs' at the bottom of that page). It is probably not actually at the card end of the connector, but the dongles which really have to be twisted and turned - the dongles are a bad short-term 'transitional' fix NVidia rammed through before its time, IMO. Fortunately, the Seasonic PSU I use for the 4090 is compliant re. specs and now offers a single cable... -

Now, now, now...I wonder where you folks have been all these years re. melting connectors long before the hideous dongle thing (soon to be replaced) for 4090s...? I've got a melted PCIe 8 pin connector as well, though pics below are from others per the interweb also, a hideous & temporary 4-into-1 dongle =/= lack of fun...below is the 4K average for ~ 40 games as tested by TechPowerUp- 31 replies

LG A1 =/= LG C1 ...still, with other prices going up, good to keep track on what's happening in tv world. As mentioned, we might be in the market soon for a new OLED 55 (or if I have my way, 65) -

That's around Canadian $ 1,300...by coincidence, I was at a chain store yesterday to pick up s.th. else (Starbucks and Kicking Horse coffee on sale for Can$ 9.99 instead of Can$ 14.99) and 'just happened to pass by' their electronics department. Apart from the C1 48, they also had the C1 55 on sale for Can$ 1,500...our tv in the m-bedroom is a LG 55 IPS HDR but getting on in years (~4.5)...thinking...thinking...better make strong coffee first, though -
Starting to game with the RTX 4090 on the OLED.... Cyberpunk 2077, driving the motorbike off the bridge at high speed and ending up in the water (on purpose - why ? Because I can...) FS2020 is supposed to get DLSS3 and other goodies for SU11 scheduled for general release on November 11... NY Cologne Tokyo Barcelona (w/ 3090)
