  1. Good to know. That was one of my main concerns. I also just wonder how those chipset fans hold up longterm.
  2. Well I guess this thread is moot. I just happened to check my local Micro Center's website today and they got a shipment in of ASUS X570 Dark Hero boards. I jumped on that and placed an order for one. Love the fact it doesn't use a chipset fan.
  3. Sadly I gotta actually watch what I get for it to fit in my case with a water block. Looks like XC3 and Tuf 3080's will fit, but Strix and FTW3 as well as the ridiculously oversized MSI and Gigabyte boards will not. As for the 3060/3060 Ti VRAM thing, I think it's pretty clear that the 3060 was meant to be a 6GB card, but they chose to make it 12GB instead in the wake of RDNA2 and a theoretical 12GB 6700 XT in the future. It's all marketing. Obviously the faster card will be the 8GB 3060 Ti.
  4. Thank you Enterprise! Yeah I'm going to be doing some reading up. I've been so far removed from this game since my last build in 2014/2015 it's taking a while to get back in.
  5. So I think I narrowed down to two options. Thoughts on Gigabyte Aorus Master X570 vs the MSI X570 Unify? Similarly priced, any pros and cons for each? Leaning MSI, but thought I'd ask. Also saw an ASUS ROG Crosshair VIII Hero similarly priced to the Gigabyte. The one thing I wasn't sure on the MSI board though is the Realtek ethernet. Any good. All my board have been Intel.
  6. That reminds me...I have an old unopened AX1200. I'll probably just use that in the next build assuming there's no issue from it having sat in a closet since probably 2012. Got it as a warranty replacement and never opened it as I had bought a new PSU at Micro Center unable to wait.
  7. I guess the biggest other thing I am concerned about is if they come with BIOS that support Zen 3 out of the box or if I need to update which could be problematic since I don't have a Zen 2 chip to throw in there. Not sure if that's even a problem, but just something that is in the back of my mind.
  8. Hence the 3090...I got you. I am not at 4K (I'm at 1440p right now). Admittedly 3080 is probably a little overkill, but considering the price I intend to hold onto it for many years like I did my current 980. At the very least, skip 40-series, maybe look at 50-series. Total VRAM is less a concern for me at 1440p...I think I'll be ok with 10GB. And if not...well guess we'll see.
  9. Congrats! At this point I will continue to wait for a 3080. 3090 even at MSRP is way more than I want to spend on a single component. Frankly so is the 3080 once it starts getting above $800 for the non-FE models. I am toying with the idea of 3070 but that one would definitely have to be around the $500 - $600 range for me to really consider it. So I think 3080 for me. The only problem I am having is determining what will actually fit in my O11-Dynamic (non-XL version, just the regular) in terms of width and length (due to reservoir) AND has waterblocks available. I've ruled out Strix and FTW3 models due to width. TUF and XC3 looks like they'll fit width wise, but worried about them being too long. FE would be fine, but I am going to just assume that will be impossible to really find at this rate. MSI models look to be comically way too long. Gigabyte not sure but looked like some had detached power connectors from the PCB. I'm not interested in distro blocks and prefer a pump/reservoir unit. Worst case I'll rethink my plan for a 360 rad on top, 360 rad on bottom strategy and do maybe a 240 up top, 360 bottom, and shift the reservoir up so its out of the way. Just depends really. Could also do a radiator on the side maybe...might crowd it a little bit.

    5800x temps?

Oh a monoblock. Higher temps makes sense then. Cool. Put my mind at ease, thanks.
  11. At this point I think there are plenty of plans for a 3080 20GB or a 3080 Ti, but I don't think we'll see these products. Considering the current landscape, there is no reason for Nvidia to further segment the GA102 die into additional SKUs which will either cannibalize 3090 sales, or else further hurt efforts for stock on existing 3090 and 3080 products if they have to divert chips to a 3080 Ti. My thought is that by the time stock becomes somewhat normal, we'll be close enough to a 40-series that it won't matter if there is a 3080 Ti or not. Now my honest opinion is that the 3080 should have been released as a 12GB 384-bit card and then you wouldn't have had everyone crying about VRAM and you could then avoid the whole 3080 Ti/20GB 3080 thing altogether.

    5800x temps?

You get that hot under water? Hmm makes me a little concerned but I am assuming the 5600X should be a bit cooler than the 5800X. What's your WC setup look like?
  13. Thanks, that's actually very helpful. Yeah I didn't like how all the X570 boards have those little chipset fans, but seeing this chart, I see what you mean. Yep will look for an X570. I liked that the Dark Hero didn't have that chipset fan. But will look at these other ones you mentioned.
  14. Put in for the Newegg shuffle again for both the 5600X, 5800X and the 3070's they have. Won the 5600X, so order is placed. Honestly was hoping for the 5800X or better a 5900X, but will take what I can get and repurpose this down the line if I really need to. Now need to figure out a motherboard. I was able to fully place an order for an ASUS Dark Hero X570 but then got the dreaded email back that they voided it. I liked it since it didn't have the chipset fan. So maybe will look at some B550 boards. I'm not really in the know on AMD boards so will probably need to do some research.
  15. Oh trust me I know. This was stock prior to today. Looks like they got one 5700XT left at the moment.
  16. Micro Center had a couple 5700 XT's today and they were $600. ?
  17. Not surprising really. They are able to sell every single 3090 they can in the current climate, so why sell 102 dies for less.
  18. You joke, but have you not seen this from Razer? https://www.razer.com/concepts/razer-project-hazel
  19. Wow, crazy pricing. What is up with all these covers and "armor" or whatever they call it all over the boards too these days? I actually like seeing my motherboard. Not tacky plastic. Or am I being dumb and that's just the monoblock?
  20. I don't know, anymore most motherboards look the same to me with the silly RGB and all this "armor" and covers all over it. In terms of straight up copying, yeah the ASUS board looks almost identical. The MSI board, I don't see it. Different color and only similarity really is all the covers all over it (when did that trend start?).
  21. I left my Dad's machine on Windows 7 simply because it would be hard for him to relearn a new OS. I do think I will just have to bite the bullet on that one and move him as he sometimes clicks things he shouldn't. I do worry about security. At home most of my computers in the house are on 10 now. My main PC though is still on 8.1 Pro.
  22. You know, I re-read the article fresh today and I guess I am fine. I suppose the bin could be worse, but otherwise its still just one of the CCD's disabled from a failed 5900X right? My initial concern was a potential situation where 5600X and 5800X were running some cores in both CCD's. I don't know where that idea came from. Concerns withdrawn.
