  1. Tell me about it. My non-Ti 980 is hating my 1440p monitor upgrade I got a year ago. The last AMD system I had was some single core Athlon way back in the day (not sure which, I was a kid ? ). Been Intel ever since my Core 2 Duo E8500. Glad AMD are back in the game, and happy to reward them with an AMD Zen 3 build for that work. That said, hope Intel can get their act together. We need both companies to be healthy and innovative/competitive against each other rather than just swapping places.
  2. I had always wondered how AIOs held up being mixed metal with years of usage. Thanks for sharing the rebuild!
  3. All the potential intakes have filters. Yeah case is a bit different. Instead of a front intake, it intakes from the side. There seems to be enough room to mount 360 radiators either top/side or top/bottom.
  4. The only problem I see AMD having is whether or not their software suite will have a DLSS competitor, and do we know if the teaser we saw the other day had ray tracing running? I just care about rasterization performance personally, but these will be things Nvidia can still market to consumers over AMD unless AMD has something comparable. AMD will need to bring a competitive software/features along with the cards general performance. Couldn't agree more. At this stage, not looking to build anything new till March probably. Depending on how things do progress with RDNA2/Ampere though, maybe that will push out even longer. Guess we'll see.
  5. Good to know thanks! Yeah I am coming from a 4790k and planning for Zen 3 early next year so was worried if I needed to do a BIOS update, not like I have a Zen 2 part lying around.
  6. I was thinking the exact same thing. ? Anyway, this looks like a really cool build. Looking forward to the updates!
  7. Interesting. That would mean it was in development for a long time in parallel with the Samsung 8nm development though. 8nm was really just a refinement of Samsung 10nm so was not like they could just port it over to TSMC 7nm. If true, it really does feel like Samsung 8nm was a stopgap measure to get to market first even if no one could actually buy one.
  8. Yep, it has been a not so pleasant smelling wind.
  9. Yeah, my 980 (non Ti) can't handle 1440p so definitely looking mostly to upgrade that, but figure a new platform and DDR4 doesn't hurt either. My 4790k/DDR3/Z97 is running almost 6 years old now.
  10. Gaming is really the only intensive thing I do. I'm thinking the 5800X will probably be what I end up with. Not sure if there is really an advantage going up to 12 cores for gaming. I guess the 5900X does have a higher boost. Guess I'll wait and see the benches and go from there.
  11. First Al Capone and now John McAfee. If there's one thing the US government will always catch you on, it's tax evasion (unless you are a politician or something).
  12. Personally feels weird to me that one would upgrade a CPU every year. But hey that's just me. So if I buy a 500-series motherboard in say Feb/March next year for a Zen 3 build, they should have the BIOS to run it?
  13. This, am aware of schools that bought thousands of laptops. I'm sure businesses where people weren't already on laptops did as well.
  14. Thanks! I really wasn't sure going in, but I really like it now. Also because I don't do any RGB or other lighting in my systems, it's fun to do cool color schemes. Toying with hard line tubing next build, I may just paint the tubes if I end up going that route (as I will use clear fluid). Nice solution! Question, does RAM get hot, or is it more for the aesthetic? Yeah I have found a lot of cases have very restrictive grills or meshes that quite noticeably affect temps and noise. Nice solution! When I first got into building and had a Corsair 650D, I remember having to cut out the front grill and it very much helped the restriction but more so the noise as well. I'll have to see about 140mm fans and radiators when I build the new rig (and if they fit in this new case). Would love to increase radiator space and lower fan RPMs as a silence freak.
  15. Yeah I don't think it is reasonable to expect AMD to be a scrub budget brand from the Faildozer era forever. That said, would be nice if they didn't lack certain SKUs with this launch like a 5700X and sub $300 as well. They are certainly leaving certain price segments open where you have to jump more than $50 hike from Zen 2.
  16. There's definitely room in the stack between the $299 5600X and $449 5800X pricing wise. We'll see if they want to do anything there though for fear of eating into 5800X sales. I don't plan to build anything till probably around Feb or March next year, so here's hoping.
  17. Pretty happy by what I see from the marketing, but as always will wait to see the actual reviews and benchmarks and see if it shapes up. That said, AMD seemed to have a lot of bravado in this presentation. Architecturally, glad to see 8 cores unified on a single CCX. I was ok with the $50 price hikes, but them getting rid of or at least not announcing a replacement for the 3700X for instance does raise the price of entry into R7 more than the $50 hike. 3700X was $329 at launch and the 5800X being the only R7 entry at launch with $449 price makes it more like a $120 hike into that class of CPU. It makes sense from a business standpoint since the 3700X ate into 3800X sales I am sure, but still is a little disappointing as a consumer where all things being close enough, the lower cost part would probably win my money. Without a 5700X, it wouldn't be a stretch to think AMD might be hoping people say what's another $100 and go for the 5900X over the 5800X. That would be a much harder choice with a $349-$379 5700X.
  18. This is where I am with it as well. That feels like a worthy upgrade to retire my 4790k. 52 minutes now for the livestream.
  19. I highly doubt this short delay has anything to do with supply/demand and everything to do with giving them a day to adjust pricing depending on what RDNA2 ends up looking like in their announcement. Going to the 29th from the 15th is hardly enough time to significantly impact the supply for the demand. I mean how many weeks has it been now since 3080 released? 2? 3? Supply isn't any better.
  20. I thought about waiting this out till Zen 4 or whatever next platform supposedly has DDR5 support. But I am struggling running newer games at 1440p on my current 4790k / 980 platform so I think I'll just bite the bullet with Zen 3 and RDNA2/Ampere. Besides it will be expensive when it first releases, so I am ok not being on that bleeding edge.
  21. Same. I first got into water-cooling as a necessity in 2012. Where I lived at the time, we had no AC and the PC got far too hot and loud in the summer for me to be comfortable with. Since then, I've become addicted to silent computing where I make the PC as silent as possible with water-cooling. New build next year will be dual 360 rads and will get rid of these noisy HDD's since SSD storage is cheap enough now. This D5 pump does a good job moving water even at low speeds where you can't hear it, so am happy about that. I honestly don't see me ever going back to air.
  22. So I had to get out of my Corsair Air 540 case as it was becoming a noisy vibrating mess and if there is one thing I am when it comes to my computers, is a silence freak. For now I just migrated everything from it to the O-11 Dynamic. I have space to expand to 360 radiators of course, but don't plan on doing so until I build a new Zen 3 / Ampere or RDNA2 build next year. For that I am wondering what people have found to be the optimal radiator/fan intake and exhaust placement? For now I set up one of my 240 rads up top with 2 fans as exhaust in push. The other 240 radiator is side with fans intake also in push. Will probably put a fan as intake at the bottom as well as temps are a bit higher than my 540 was. When I upgrade (including new 360 rads to replace these 6 year old 240's) I am wondering if it would be better to have 3 fans intake from the side with top and bottom radiators both exhausting? Or maybe side and bottom intake with top exhausting? Not sure. This case is definitely different so not sure what is optimal. Curious what others think?
