IIRC this doesn't ship til the end of the year, so most likely it won't be on top by then. Still, definitely impressive especially for ARM though I suspect there will be some drawbacks that apple won't mention any any of their marketing material.

One thing is for sure - it is good to see some solid competition among chip vendors...though as the referenced article states, "This is definitely not just saying that the Apple Silicon is better than the highly praised Ryzen 9 5000 series processors, as clearly both of the AMD parts can obliterate the M1 rival in cross-platform rating where a “composite” of tests are utilized to stress the processor. The biggest takeaway to be had from this performance is that Apple’s first attempt to take on AMD and Intel in this arena resulted in the first-generation ARM-based M1 SoC smashing benchmarks left, right, and center."

 

Still, Apple's M1 is a powerhouse and can only get better from here...the one question in my mind, given Apple's ARM design (same for another new chip, by and for Amazon) what will happen to the ARM libraries in terms of competition if NVidia succeeds in taking over Arm Ltd.

This is great, except doesn't TSMC make these? This could really hurt AMD if Apple buys up all of the production.

Yea I think this one in the benchmark is the m1x or m2, is it not? Maybe I got the wrong info when I looked it up.

The article only mentions the M1, so that's the current-gen chip.

 

Here's another article that talks about leaked benchmarks for an M1X, but that appears to be a 12-core variant of the M1 also clocked at 3.2 GHz, so its single-thread is the same.

Is it not the case that the 8 core M1 chip comes out at the end of the year? That's what the article is talking about right? 

 

If this is the same M1 chip that's been out for a while, why wasn't this news sooner? I just figured since this is recent news, must be a new CPU.

I'm not sure where you got the end of the year part from in that article. Macbook Air and Macbook Pro 13" both have the 8 core M1 chip now.

 

Edit: I do believe there is speculation around a future M1X/M2 chip.

When I looked it up, I found an article that is only 7 days old that said "release date: November". I thought for sure they meant November of this year but apparently it was last November.

The way Apple operates, if it's officially announced, it's for sale. I may not be a big fan of buying Apple products (other than their stock) for my own personal use, but I am a fan of their "no paper launch" strategy.

 

As for the MBP M1, I will say that its battery life is phenomenal. I can easily get more than two workdays of regular business productivity use without charging. That's a bigger deal to me than it having the fastest CPU in my household right now out of five computers.

Yep, I can agree with the paper launch thing.

 

My coworker gets his tomorrow. He wants to start testing stuff on these new M1 devices, plus his old Macbook battery was dead. My 2018 MBP is going but the butterfly keyboard is utter crap and the screen has started to occasionally flicker out.
