Asus Strix Z690-A Issues

Recommended Posts

Just when you think you know what MB you are going to pull the trigger on.....

I was looking through customer reviews on the board, and there is a fairly large number reporting the same issue, even in 4 star reviews. The common complaint is M.2 slots just up and dying out of nowhere. There are reports of slots DOA out of the box, and some stating it happened a month or two in. The complaint seemed to be most prevalent on NewEgg.

Out of curiosity, has anyone noticed reports of this in other boards? As in, is this some Z690 issue that has been, or is being addressed?

The other curious thing is that people are stating this, yet keeping the boards and giving them four and five star reviews. What the......?

That's bizarre. I would not be leaving 4 or 5 star reviews if my primary storage slots are just straight up dying or DOA.

Slots being DOA or going dead after a while sounds like a physical fault with the board. I have not seen the reviews myself, but is anyone stating that when the slot died it took out their NVMe drive as well ?

Very bizarre. All say they moved the drive to another slot that was still working. But, the whole "it's broken but it's fine" mindset has become pretty prevalent these days.

No reports of drives being damaged.

Now I need to decide between a TUF or an MSI. Midrange boards not having temp sensors these days is a PITA. My setup is simple, and doesn't really call for a Quadro, but looks like I'm not going to have a choice.

Are there no other higher end boards to be had  ? Forgive me, being that I am not leaping to the new DDR5 gen just yet, I have not been looking at the newer hardware.

We've talked about some of these issues Ciar, I would stay clear of z690 and DDR5 as long as possible. I just had my RMA'd kit of G.Skill 5600 die. I will not be sending them back for a second RMA. Luckily I had an additional kit which I am now using. It honestly just isn't worth it to try at all at this point.

From what I have read, NO Z690 board is immune from RAM OCing issues despite any price tag. I have heard some rumblings about M.2. Drives, but have not read anything specific.

Price we pay for bleeding edge eh ! There was a time I used to do that, but these days within reason my systems are fairly critical so I tend not to adopt new platforms early.

I am trying to stay to a midrange DDR4 board. I may just wait a bit. Seeing so many BIOS, RAM, etc issues.

People have gotten used to paying for the privilege of being "test it in prod" beta testers. True with so many things these days sadly. 😠

Yeah, the Z690/12900K benchmarks scores are impressive, but I have decided my days of playing guinea pig are over. I am fed up paying lots of money for buggy/broken junk being released as public beta on the bleeding edge. I am trying to make myself just ignore new tech no matter what it looks like until it has been out for at least a year and let other people spend their money on the privilege of being a crash test dummy.

I think we have the BGA turdbook jockeys to thank for that screwed up mindset. Nonsense such as it being "normal" for garbage to thermal throttle at 100°C and have CPU/GPU/memory soldered to the motherboard is a prevalent mindset, and it is really messed up. People need to stop forgiving failures and incompetence. They are rewarding the companies selling broken trash by purchasing it.

True but we cant do nothing about it.

Governement need to increase warantly lengh to stop those greedy company.

Only Clevo is still selling non BGA notebook.

But Asus quality control is none these days. Their TUF was 5 years now it like 2 or 3.

My msi z690 a pro with 2x16gb 3600 cl14 booted first time and i just enabled xmp and it running f@h for the past 3 days on cpu/gpu with 2nvme without issue 😁

Reading this isn't exactly encouraging me to swap from my Rampage V Extreme. It survived a secondary graphics card literally catching fire and the PCI-Express slot still works fine. They don't build them like they used to from the sounds of it.

That said, hopefully supply constraints due to Covid-19 are just making manufacturers resort to lower quality materials for the moment. I am finding it a little confusing trying to figure our why one fancy looking z690 or z790 is better than the another. The difference in price between things can be in the hundreds it seems, and I've even seen some motherboards for more than a grand. Again, maybe down to supply issues.

I think the issue is mostly component these days are ways better. That why most gaming notebook are overheating all days long without problem.

And for motherboard i just saw an old record on a piece of crap 6 phase motherboard at 8ghz on hwbot.
