Sony acquiring Bungie

Recommended Posts

Quote

Bungie separated from Microsoft in 2007, but Microsoft retained the rights to the Halo franchise. The studio has since launched the multiplayer first-person shooter franchise Destiny, which comprises two major releases so far.

Sony will pay $3.6 billion for Bungie, which is now based in Bellevue, Washington, and has more than 900 employees on payroll.

Kinda funny, bold move to go after the company that put their competition on the map.

From what I've read it sounds like the deal Bungie is agreeing to will allow them to continue to release games on multiple platforms and maintain a high level of autonomy, with Sony coming in as a parent company. Bungie doesn't really have a lot of IP these days so I doubt Sony was looking at this deal as a good way to lock down any specific games but rather just a way to acquire manpower more so than anything else, as well as grab an IP that has a consistent cash flow. I suspect Bungie is working on a new Destiny like MMO game and they will want it to be multiplatform to maintain the cash stream.

I'll admit there is definitely some cause for concern that some titles may end up being exclusive in the long run that otherwise wouldn't have been, but I'm optimistic that the overall benefit from these mergers will be higher quality games from both Microsoft and Sony. Just going to have to wait and see what happens.

I have to say, certainly a tit for tat approach. Arguably though, Microsoft gets more out of their acquisition....then again they paid a great deal more.

Yes....lets consolidate everything down to 2 or 3 companies and add some vendor lock-in for good measure.  I'm sure it will be Great!

Yes. Unfortunately the pool of independent developers is getting smaller which could be an issue. I wonder if the reason some of these once independent companies sell to the larger corporations is based on their own financial struggles being smaller VS just selling out to get rich. Not saying for one minuet everyone is in it for the money, but would be interesting.

I'm guessing there is always a "promise" that they can maintain control and have artistic freedom, but seriously....after a year or two, those in charge will be pushed out and forced to move to another studio or start a new one.
