USB 3.2 (Gen 2) - 10Gbe Ethernet.

ENTERPRISE

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Is anyone aware of a USB 3.2 (Gen2) adapter to 10Gbe Ethernet ? Do they exist ? I can fairly easily find 5Gbe versions. Granted due to USB overhead, you would never get a full 10Gbe over USB. That being said though, if there are 10Gbe ones available I would prefer to go for one of those.  Also worth mentioning that my USB port is NOT Thunderbolt unfortunately.

Thanks,

E

I hunted for one when I first built my HTPC (X300W with no PCIe expansion) and I had to settle for 5 GbE 😪

I'm using a StarTech USB adapter (US5GA30) and I don't have any complaints, after you take the USB overhead into account I really only just see ~ 3 GbE sustained though.

It was the cheapest when I bought it (was $80) but it's $120 now, if I was buying one now I'd probably spring for the TrendNet TUC-ET5G ($69). Dunno how well prices match up over there though.

Thanks for the info. I did see the StarTech version and consider it an option alongside the QNAP version. I did not spot the Trendnet one though, so will check it out.

To be honest, even if I only get 3 Gbe out of it, that's better what I am getting now, so it is still a win.

In our Buyer's Guide, we summarize our USB 3.1 Gen1 to 5GbE network adapter reviews so our readers can make quick comparisons

Looks like the Sabrent steals the show with its performance and pricing.

In our Sabrent NT-SS5G review, we see how this USB 3.1 Gen1 to 5GbE adapter based on the Marvell AQC111U controller performs and compares

Unfortunately, it's physically limited to USB 3.1 and thus only performs up to 3.4Gbps instead of somewhere near 5Gbps? This is bordering on false advertisement.

Anyway, it seems most, if not all, 5GbE adapters are suffering heat issues and throttle and may even disconnect.  It's unfortunate, but 2.5GbE seems like the best value and most reliable for the mean time.  We really should be at 10GbE across everything by now.

Yeah unfortunately none of the adaptors out there are USB 3.2 which sucks to be honest. It is false advertising really. I would think about a 2.5Gbe version but even if the 5gbe is performance gimped, I will take the extra performance over the 2.5Gbe.

If my build was not mini-itx, I would just slam in a network card, but alas that is not possible due to the GPU I have in there for transcoding, as its a Plex server also. Not sure how often my GPU gets used for transcoding to be honest. Might be worth sacrificing. Not sure.

swap the GPU with a Thunderbolt card and run an external dGPU and a 10 GbE Thunderbolt adapter? 🙃

kinda defeats the purpose of an ITX system though

what CPU? if you're running Intel, UHD 620/630 can transcode on Plex surprisingly well
