AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D benchmarks

Last week early results for the Ryzen 7 5800X3D have been posted by XanxoGaming. Now more results have been posted.

The results you see have been posted by them, yet did not fall under embargo, as he got his sample through another party. They were able to get the processor on the open market, but they didn't say how much it cost in Peru (where it was bought). It will be available for purchase for $449 USD, which is about 120 to 140 USD less than the Core i9-12900K MSRP for 1,000 units.

The website pitted the 5800X3D against an Alder Lake machine with the identical DDR4-3200 CL14 memory type. Those are certainly not ideal specifications for a high-end machine, regardless of whether it's based on the Zen3 or Alder Lake architecture, but they're constant across tests. Furthermore, gaming testing are conducted with the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti Founders Edition, eliminating the need for comparisons across multiple GPU versions. XanxoGaming is performing a CPU gaming test, hence 1080p or even 720p resolutions are employed. Such resolutions are unlikely to be used by end users, but they are the greatest method to illustrate CPU gaming capability.

Not a major victory, but it seems the 5800X3D generally beats or at least ties the Core i9-12900K for gaming.

@The Pooksuggested that Team Blue is being hamstrung in these tests by the use of mediocre DDR4 memory.  I am not informed enough to have an opinion either way, but it does seem like something to keep in mind when comparing these CPUs.

Emm i think it was that in the last thread about this, the intel CPU had much worse DDR5 ram because the latency was so high but here it's an even comparison.

I don't feel bad opting for a cheaper 5900X.

I guess people could argue all day about the RAM situation, because on one hand, DDR4-3200 with an i9-12900KF is very sub-optimal, but it's also sub-optimal for Zen 3 Ryzen. The DDR4 is also at a more palatable price point for the otherwise more expensive Intel platform. TechPowerUp did extensive testing on DDR5 and concluded:

That's also why I included the DDR4-3600 CL16 "sweet spot" configuration in the test results. DDR4 is readily available and has come down in pricing a lot in recent months despite the crisis and shortages. In applications, we see DDR4-3600 CL16 roughly on par with DDR5-4800, which is the lowest speed grade DDR5 announced at this time, so almost nothing is lost despite the numeric difference of "3600" vs. "4800" and huge price increase tied to it. In gaming, which is more sensitive to memory timings than memory bandwidth, our DDR4-3600 configuration works even better, achieving FPS similar to DDR5-5600. The takeaway here is to focus on DDR4 unless you absolutely want to play with the new DDR5 tech. Motherboards are cheaper, too, and you can use the DDR4 memory you already have.

In this article, we take a closer look at the performance scaling you can expect for various DDR5 configurations. We test from DDR5-6000 all...

So it doesn't seem like the memory makes a big enough difference in the grand scheme of things, which isn't that surprising considering this is what happens with every transition to a new generation of DDR RAM. I think the real takeaway is that L3 cache is clearly beneficial to gaming.

Also, here's the original review from XanxoGaming which shows all their benchmarks.

Full TPU review here: TPU 5800X3D Review

Personally I think I am happy I opted to just get the 5900X under $400 as 1440p relative performance difference between the two is 6.7% in favor of the 5800X3D, and out of the 10 gaming benchmarks shown, 2 show significant improvements for the 5800X3D (Far Cry 5, Borderlands 3), meanwhile, the other 8 seem marginal.
