Assistance required with build

So I am starting a new build, all I have so far is the memory (grabbed a good deal). 
 
I stated by building around the i5-12600, then I though well its only $100 more for the 12-600k but then its only $100 more for the i7 so on and so on… so here I am asking for some guidance. 
 
What will I use the desktop for:
 
·      The usual office apps web browsing etc
·      Light development work, only compile large projects 1-2x p/a
·      Running VM’s, usually 3-4 at a time for running attack scenarios and malware analysis.
·      Gaming, I have no intention of buying a graphics card right now but I know I will in the future.
 
 
 
What I have so far in my build list
 
CPU: i5-12600k
Mobo: Asus Prime z690-P
Memory: Kingston FURY Renegade 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4 3600MHz CL16
 
 
I haven’t chosen cpu, cooler or storage yet. 
 
With all this in mind will I need more than the 12600K?

Excited to see what you come up with. Fist thing if first. What is your budget? I have owned the ASUS Prime z690-p and was not a fan. It was cheaply built and lacked things like POST indication lights and had trouble with XMP settings, so I would steer well clear of that board. My advice would be for the 12700KF if you don't need integrated graphics, it can be had on Amazon right now for $350.

1-2 VM's run all the time the rest I spin up for a couple of hours or a few days.

Dam thats a shame as that board seams to be the best low budget z690 board available in my country (New Zealand)

 

I am looking at getting one with igpu so I can spend more on the base build now. I am wanting to spend $1800 - $2000 NZD Max.

Alright, so you are at about $1200 (Including the RAM). You said you have a case, can it accommodate a 360 AIO? How much storage do you think you'll need?

I have the FD Meshify 2 so I can fit a 360 in the front or a 240 at the top. I am thinking 2TB should do, I can always buy more when a good deal pops up.

Any of the 360 AIO's from your site should be decent. I would tend to go with Cooler Master or NZXT versions as I don't like to recommend things that I haven't actually used myself. They are both solid and should be sufficient for a 12600k not being pushed too hard. They are in the range of $300. 

 

As far as storage, getting a 2TB NVME would probably put you out of budget. The selection on the site is somewhat limited. The Samsung here is hard to beat considering alternative choices

you can fit a 360 up top in both the Meshify 2 and S2, you can technically fit a 280 or 420 up top but you need low profile RAM/VRM heatsinks.

 

I've got an S2 and ran both a H115i and a LF2 360, and I had to run my 280 in the front or it hit my VRM heatsinks. 360 fits up top without any issue.

Oof, even their gen 3 nvme drives are expensive. Yeah I agree this is a good way to go and have used Crucial SSD's since forever (whenever the M4 came out). These things are rock solid. So can totally get the 1TB Samsung for nvme and add to it. Looks like a 1TB MX500 is only $149. I also have one of these going into the new rig, and have had another one in use in another rig in the house for years now. Solid drives.

Yea, he's in New Zealand and stated he needed integrated graphics which ruled out the KF. He could have saved $50 on his site of choice by going that route.

Nice thanks, that ssd looks nice! I can grab that and a 1tb drive to start with, the msi board has plenty m2 and sata so no issue there.

Really? I thought It physically couldn't fit? The memory I have is the kingston fury Renegade 2x16GB CL16, I am not sure if thats considered low profile or not.

Yes you are correct it seems to be a about a $50 difference between the K and the KF on eBay.

The spacing between the mounting screw holes is too wide. If the chassis is designed with rail/slot spacing designed to fit 120mm fans only, then it won't work.
