1995 Lexus LS400 fix log

Recommended Posts

I say get the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S and don't look back. I think Lexus was probably more attentive to ensuring good NVH qualities with the LS considering how iconic the wine glass pyramid TV advert was, but I can tell you that Michelin Pilot Sports often end up being the last piece needed to solve the vibration puzzle for many GS owners.

I'm going to keep the tyres that are on it at the moment because like I said, they're still pretty much brand new, but once they're worn out, I'm definitely going to go for the Pilot Sport 4s. I do get them tomorrow so that's neat.

I got all the wheels on. It also doesn't move under it's own power yet, I tried to push it back to get it on more level and safe ground, instead, the car rolled forwards and is now stuck. I'll have to see if I can get it towed out or something.

You can actually see how far it rolled forward based on the concrete slab there which I didn't move.

The wheels look good Andrew!
Glad you used oem wheels instead of aftermarket, this one really suits the car.

And maybe an idea, if you push on the top of the wheel instead of the car body itself you are twice as strong. Works pretty good if you are alone

Basically everything is done now. now I just need to get these things + oil filter + spark plugs + front license plate + battery and it should be ready for an MOT.

They just used the USDM ones because cheaper. It doesn't really matter, I think it would look better without any at all. It is legal for me to do that, but it's going to be a pain because I'd have to fill in the hole and do paint matching so I'm just going to leave them there.

The electric window switches were sticky so I decided to take them out for a clean and a bit of grease so they're not sticky anymore. Problem is, as it turns out, 26 year old plastic is very brittle. I hope superglue is going to be good enough to fix this. If not, I might as well buy a 3D printer that can do ABS. It will be cheaper and easier than trying to source non-brittle replacement parts. My phone does have LIDAR so I think I should just be able to do a 3D scan of the parts. Not sure if it's going to be high res enough to actually use.

Whether it's glue or epoxy, I never seem to have luck with liquid adhesives, and cheap super glues are among the worst of them all in terms of durability. However, a product like this might work.

PASCOFIX.DE

Der PASCOFIX Industrieklebstoff wurde ausschließlich für unsere Firma gemäß unserem Auftrag entwickelt und ist in seiner Art und Qualität...

I've used it on a bracket that holds the computer on my washing machine to the front trim panel and it's been holding up fine so far after a few months of minimum twice-weekly use. I applied some excess glue and filler and then sanded it down flat, so the bond is a bit stronger than what you would normally be able to achieve with the cheaper stuff.

Thanks, I'll have to do something like that, I tried 3D scanning something using my phone and the resolution is too low, the highest resolution it can do is 3mm which isn't good enough plus two people I know with 3D printers said don't do it for multiple reasons. I am just going to try superglue at first because it's cheaper and I can get some tomorrow. If that fails, I'll get that if I can find it locally. Importing things from the EU is now a PITA and expensive.

Just superglue for now, if it breaks again in the future and I can't find a replacement one that's the right wood, I'll just go with the epoxy fix. That should be more permanent if the superglue alone isn't.

I saw a video on the internet of someone who was having issues with an engine in a car stored outside that hadn't been started in 5 years, the engine was seized and it took a lot of work to fix it. My car has been outside for 6 years and hasn't been started in just as long so I thought I'd try turning it over using a breaker bar on the crankshaft, it's not seized, but it also seems like there's no compression.

I've not been employed since September so I'm basically living off savings now. I'm waiting for some paperwork to go through that will allow me to get a job that I actually want to do and is worth doing. The waiting list for me is 8 months at the minimum so it's going to be a long time before I can continue to fix my car. I have destroyed the a couple of wheel studs for one of my wheels by crossthreading them after I put them on wrong then forced them on anyway. Luckily it's not a big deal, The 1998-2004 Daihatsu Sirion uses the same wheel studs so I can get them for £0.98 each rather than £4.99 each if I get the Lexus ones that have the same thread, mounting type and length. I might as well replace all of them. It's going to cost £19.60 for the Daihatsu ones vs £99.80 for the Lexus ones.

Is it honestly worth removing the coil-overs (or any other thing that might degrade) to store inside while you wait? Also de-humidifying the interior (if you remove the seats to preserve the leather)?
