Apple to Allow Outside App Stores in Overhaul Spurred by EU Laws

According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, Apple's software engineering and services teams are making massive changes to Apple's platform to allow "alternative" app stores. This would allow customers to download applications to their iPhone or iPad outside of Apple's control (and 30% commission). This represents a huge change in Apple's App Store policies as it tries to comply with recent EU legislation.

That is great news, someone needed to step in and change this. Hopefully this will also apply to other regions as well at some point now the precedent has been set.

Its funny, at work I deal with releases for our apps on both Android and iOS platforms and 3 years ago, Android would take maybe at most 4 hours to approve a new build to the Prod App Store while Apple would take as much was 1-2 days.

For at least the last year that flip flopped and now my iOS build get approved same day sometimes within a few hours, and Google takes like 1-2 days.

Not sure what happened but thought that was interesting. Seems app review processes have changed at both places.

EU has my respect!  I didn't think anything would crack the Apple walled garden.  It's their greatest asset, and their biggest flaw.  Between this and forcing USB-C instead of lightning, Apple is quickly on their way to being just another phone.  I wonder how much it's going to hit their pocket books.

It's almost enough to make me respect Epic Games....  If only they didn't harvest Steam data and force exclusives, I might actually use them.
