AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D Coming in Jan 2023: 30% Faster than the Intel Core i9-13900K (200MB Cache, Rumor)

Recommended Posts

"AMD plans to announce its Zen 4 3D V-Cache processors at CES 2023. According to @quasarzone, there will be three variants of the next-gen X3D design: the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, the Ryzen 9 7900X3D, and the 7950X3D. They will feature eight, twelve, and sixteen cores like their planar variants. The second-generation V-Cache technology will offer significantly more on-die bandwidth, but the buffer size should remain unchanged."

The Ryzen 7 7800X3D will likely pack a 3D stacked cache die with 64MB of SRAM for a total of 100MB cache memory. The Ryzen 9 7900X3D could either feature two 64MB cache dies or a single denser cache die with 128MB of SRAM. Furthermore, the clock speeds of the Zen 4 X3D chips will be the same or close to their vanilla variants."

Juicy update on an earlier thread here' CES '23 starts next Thursday. Also, picture a dog with its tongue hanging out and dripping while looking at 200MB of bacon...

Excusez-moi ?  Moved to rumour mill ? But I read it on the internet, so it must be true 🤪

Also, I avoided buying a 13900K or 7950X so far as I wanted to first see if the rumours of a 7950X3D would come true. I guess time will tell and we'll find out next week.

Hahah yea people and internet. Could tell them to buy toilet paper for covid instead of food or ( WATER )

Well the 13900k is a really good gaming cpu but am having issue with it.  I don't really feel like selling it but i paid so much for it it do not make any sense in keeping it if intel did a broken design.

What's wrong with the 13900K (general, or specific to yours) ? Since I skipped that gen, I'm no expert, but I hope you're using Win 11 Pro with that...

Am using windows 11 but can't remember if it pro or not. Benchmark run fine and gaming. The issue is with folding. It can't fold on gpu if their is any CPU task running either f@h or boinc. PPD just drop to like 15-400k.  It really horrendous for a 24 core 32 thread cpu.

I see, and yeah, those P + E cores seem, well, not symmetrical and potentially troublesome

...what you need is an AMD Epyc 96C/192T w/4x RTX 6000 Ada 48 GB VRAM GPUs.  And remember, this advice is worth as much as you paid for it.

Well the other problem with the 13900k is that its simply a power hog. Zen 4 definitely upped the usage from zen 3, but not like 13th gen.

Will be interesting to see if these give a similar uplift like the 5800X3D did over Zen 3. The other thing the 5800X3D did was make it ok to run more basic say DDR4-3200 memory where-as Zen 3 was more sensitive to having good memory like B-die with higher clocks/tighter timings. Might make AM5 platform more affordable if you can aim for an X3D and just a basic DDR5 kit.

Also like seeing that they are bringing 3D v-cache to additional SKUs this time. I wonder though, just because I am unfamiliar with them, are you able to still overclock/PBO/dynamic oc shift with 3D v-cache models? I thought I remember 5800X3D being lower clocked and locked down when it first came out, but I am unfamiliar with current state.

Good point would be kinda pointless if i can't overclock with my custom loop 😕

Anyways am not sure i don't even know if i could sell all my build for 1k$ and a ryzen 7950x currently would cost me like 1300$ with a crappy mobo and 32gb crappy ddr5 lol

...rumour has it that the 7900X3D and 7950X3D are clocked very similar to the non-X3D parts, but whether they can be overclocked is another matter.  I usually only build HEDT-type systems because after some gaming and oc benching fun, they will get put to use for business purposes. That said, my last two builds (3950X and 5950X) were desktop builds but still useful for business given the 4x RAM and the built-in dual network chips. AMD HEDT got expensive after the 2k series (and also shorter-lived chipsets) and Intel HEDT was MIA.

However, there are some new interesting Threadrippers coming based on the Zen4 core, and Intel for its part is readying some new workstation-HEDTs (below)...so for a full-on folding machine, you might want to wait a few months to see what is available at what price...

Seem to only use cpu. I can make run all my 16 e core without issue. By just dropping the software windows in the taskbar.

The issue is even if am just doing windows update or anything using 5%+ cpu usage ppd tank like mad.

Seem like f@h as issue with the core switching.

...time to check your credit card balance ! Ryzen 7950X3D priced at US$ 699 with a release date pf February 28th...great price, at least before you factor in the AM5 / X670 / DDR5 upgrade costs.  I am still going to wait for 3rd-party reviews (regarding asymmetric CCX, Windows scheduler and all that jazz) but if/when I go for it, it will be with two sticks of the fastest 32 GB per stick DDR5 I can find, hopefully 7200+...I know about Ryzen IF limitations, but I generally only buy one type of a DDR5 'family' to allow for mix-and-match interchangeability between work and play machines, be that Intel and/or AMD...never owned a set of GSkill AMD-specific 'Neo' for example, and never will...

... @Bastiaan_NL @bonami2 tempted ?

I'd be more interested in the 1440p/4K gaming, File Compression and Encoding performance of the new Zen4 3D chips as a real world use of the 3D Cache, at £449 the 7800X3D will need to match the 13600K for performance to make it worth switching too.

I still view the 3D Cache as quite a limited feature which works in a small amount of situations - but when it does work it has a large performance gain.

Funny they are holding till April for the 7800X3D. I imagine this is the one most gamers will actually want.

The 7950X3D makes more sense to me as you can make it a 7800X3D with a simple bios setting...

Not really tempted for now, but I bet it's gonna be a good chip!

Investing in an AM5 montherboard and a CPU to go with it will set me back at least €1600 ish, maybe even more depending on how they inflate the price in Europe.

And as far as the 7800X3D goes, for 250 less it'll be a fun one for gamers for sure.

I reckon a lot of the gamers still sit in the low to mid range of the market, the 8 core purely 3D cache CPU would be fantastic for people who don't need to do productivity work.

For me, the choice is a bit easier since I skipped LG1700 altogether (and so far, AM5). It is just too late now to get into LG1700 at this point and either way, I will get into DDR5 with the next upgrade. All that said, I first want to see lots of reviews on how the OS schedulers deal with the 7950X3D and 7900X3D.  Also, I am still thrilled with my 5950X AM4 at 4K, so there is a bit of extra time to make an informed choice on a new mobo, DDR5 etc

I agree with all of the above 😄
If, for some reason, it ends up being a crazy good performer for globals I might pull the trigger and get one of them. I just don't want to buy another motherboard..

If you need those cores. That doesn't make sense to spend $700 on for a fairly mainstream gamer.

Exactly. They are probably hoping they can upsell people waiting for those to the 7900X3D is my guess for that month and a half.

Same boat. I'm going to sit out until at least Intel 14th gen or the 8000 series, but if the rumor mill is true then it looks like Intel is going to go with 6 P-Cores + 8 E-Cores and that sounds big dumb.

Napkin math but Intel would need a ~60% IPC uplift to match multithreaded performance of a 13900K with 20 threads vs 32. then they'd still need to match AMD 🤔
