10900 (non k) to 11900k. Major reduction in some areas.

11900k w/ MCE but identical mem timings as my prior 10900 w/ MCE.  How am I getting this much of a worse result with the same kit?  11900k is in Gear 1.  Same BIOS, same setup otherwise.

I'm absolutely by NO MEANS a modern Intel guy........

Does the Northbridge clock have anything to do with those results though?  I notice the older chip has a 4.3GHz NB, and the newer one has a 4.0GHz NB.  On Ryzen setups that'd have something to do with it for sure.

lower NB clock would hurt a bit but 300mhz shouldn't make that big of a difference.

are secondaries/tertiaries set manually or are they on auto? never played with 11th gen though so beyond that ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

try updating to 1801?

I would not worry about it. Ive seen older intel cpu with same b die as me get better score in aida 64 than my 12700k.

Thanks, that's a fairly recent bios update as I just updated only a few months ago.   Timings are set manually and the ones that are set to auto are at the same exact timings as I was running on the prior cpu.  Thought it maybe was instability but even dropping the clocks on the ram quite a bit aida64 drops performance accordingly.

Didn't do a fresh install of windows but I've typically never needed to do that with just a drop in upgrade on a recent bios.

Normally I wouldn't care about Aida 64 but some games are showing substantial regression far more than 10th sometimes being faster.  Even lightly threaded games were just matching my 10900 which makes no sense.

Temps are fine with MCE and my D15 & KPX paste.  ABT + MCE that is a whole other story though, they weren't kidding about it running hot.  I can't imagine air cooling is even really feasible with 100% load on something like a 12900k.

Going to try to mess around with it a bit more and see if I can figure this out.  Oddly enough, the cpu install seemed to mess up my AMD gpu driver settings?  Did a fresh install of that too.

10th gen and 11th gen are not comparable. This is also true for 12th/13th gen comparison to prior generations. Your latency is quite good, actually.

These are two much different memory controllers. AIDA is also an extremely piss-poor benchmark that has a lot of run-to-run variance. You could try Intel MLC for a more consistent test, but the fact is that 11th gen maintains slightly higher latency than prior gens.

Thanks all for the help.  I believe it was more of a rookie mistake on my part, though my profile in my bios I was using for my 10900 only related to memory settings, it appears to have not been happy using said profile on the 11900k.

Defaulted it and went back in and now it's more on par.  44.5ns is pretty good for an 11900k?

I'm sure I've got more left in them but I just went with my last setup.    tREFI hasn't been touched yet, does it really make a worthwhile difference?

tREFI is one of the few timings that, as you raise it, not only increases bandwidth, but also decreases latency. It's one of the most rewarding timings you can adjust, but comes at the cost of higher temperatures (as the DRAM refreshes much faster), and also making the sticks more sensitive to temperature.

Thanks, makes sense.  For now, I actually put the 11900k in my current case just to rule out any oddities during stress testing (I have a Rosewill Thor V2 I've had forever).   Ram temps are ok at 1.5v but if I'm pushing anything more temp sensitive I'm going to wait until I move this rig into the Fractal Torrent case I picked up.

In the meantime, the 11900k w/ an all core at 4.8ghz is performing better in BF2042 than my 10900 at 4.6 all core.  Was really surprised by this as that is one of the few engines/games that enjoys the extra cores.  This cpu get's dumped on all the time but it's really not THAT bad.  Honestly one of the reasons I picked it up was just to test it out myself.   Got a Asrock Steel Legend z590 board + 11900k for barely over $300 new.
