A lesson on why you should listen to your wife (if she's a pc builder as good as my wife, anyway).

I have my 4090 back from MSI.

Since I got it, I had been daisy chaining two 8-pin pci-e power connectors to the 12VHPWR adapter that came with the card. It worked fine for months and I was confident in my power supply (Cooler Master V1000 80+ Gold) however, either over time because of 3 months folding 24/7 or because of P16XXX work units, the cable that was daisy chained melted and even ruined and melted the port it was connected to on the back of the PSU. The entire time, my wife was worried and obsessing over the daisy chained connector but even though I had another cable, I told her it would be fine...

Basically, we got the card back from MSI, I tried to run 3dmark11 performance, immediately got no signal on display. This was before we checked the power supply and cable. I then had her put my GT 1030 in, was pretty mad and was thinking we needed to RMA the card again.

We decided to put the 4090 back in, and I showed her how to take the psu out (remember my cable management situation on the back side of the case) and she immediately found the fault.

So long story short (sorry!) I got the one other pci-e cable I had and we plugged it into a different port, however still had to daisy chain it. Card works fine now. There should still be another connector on the back of the psu we can use (it was made for when people were doing 3x or 4x GPUs) so we ordered another cable off Ebay. However, it is coming from the Netherlands so I might be a few weeks. Until I get it, I am

1) not folding

2) not benching

3) not overclocking

Forza Horizon 5 has a rally expansion and even at 3440x1440 144Hz it isn't too demanding on the card, the card sits around 45c. So I'll play that and tear up dirt in my tuned Ford RS200. 😀

However - once I have 3 separate 8 pins connected to the adapter, I will be back at it folding 24/7 for the team. And probably not using the Galaxy 666w power limit bios 🤣

@damric@Sir Beregond

Well glad to hear the 4090 didn't die.

Just curious since you said daisy chaining. Did you have separate 8-pin (3 or 4?) coming from the PSU and plugging into the adapter to the 16-pin 12VHPWR? Or were you using one of those daisy chained cables that go from PSU to two 8-pins?

The latter. Because I was lazy (and at that point I don't think I had found the spate cable I had yet). Wife was concerned about it since day 1 with the 4090.

I am very lucky I just lost a port on the back of my psu and a cable, and my 4090 didn't catch on fire, or the system or psu itself and burn the house down.

Lesson learned. Listen to her. I was overconfident in the quality of my psu.

Wait, and you were using the 666W Galax BIOS?

That's not a quality of PSU problem, that's literally shoving way more power through a daisy chained cable designed for like 300W. Definitely lucky you did not burn the house down.

Yeah I was folding 24/7 OC'ed in Linux with a 666w power limit... For 4 months. 🔥 So I thought it was ok until one day it started giving me no signal at random, and then would also give no signal when starting a 3d load in Windows.

Also I was benching for HWBOT on that bios so..

When I get the cable I need and hook it up so each 8 pin on the adapter has it's own pci-e cable, then I will probably resume folding but not overclocked and with the stock 450w power limit. If something else happens to the cables again, I will replace the psu.

If something happens to the cables again, you may end up frying that 4090 of yours. The PSU you are using has a single 12V rail and it's very possible that the heat that melted its 18AWG cable(s) also had some impact on the components inside the psu.

Just some words of caution 😉

I'd recommend replacing the PSU as well, and slowing down a bit and learning how to do the right thing.

Thank you for the information, was not aware of the single 12v rail, and yes it is possible some components were damaged inside.

Can you recommend a replacement 1000w unit that is high quality and probably Seasonic or Superflower?

I personally wouldn't recommend using a 1000 watt psu with a 4090, but others might.

Yeah I'd shoot for 1200 or even a 1600W, especially if you wanted to run something like a 666W BIOS. In terms of what to get, not sure, haven't done any research on such PSUs.

I figure just to be safe, especially for extreme overclocks on the 666w bios (with four psu connections, of course) and my processor. Thinking about the rule that a psu runs best and is most efficient at 70-80% load. That's assuming you're thinking of one with lower wattage though.

For that config I'd get 1600W LEADEX Titan and be done worrying.

Edit: nvm they out of stock

Try:

Ended up getting a Seasonic 1200w Gold. I looked at the Superflower leadex 1600w and unfortunately it will not fit in my case, it is too long (remember the basement and that it's a midtower).

We got this one and it will fit and will have to work. I'm having obsessive thoughts over my wife putting it in because the two 8 pin EPS connectors on my board were like really really hard to get in and we couldn't get a screw in the board in the top left corner. I'm afraid when she pulls those out the mobo connector the pins will come with.

This hobby is just constantly a problem and especially for her. I told her when she got our 77" LG CX OLED and PS5 that I wouldn't upgrade my pc again. She warned me about these upgrades I got and I didn't listen.

I trust her and her work and of course would do it myself if I could but my pain is horrendous lately, every day is like torture.

Didn't want to spend that much money, worried about my mobo getting ruined. Why do I do this ish again?

Alright, we got a new PSU and made sure not to have a bend in the 12VHPWR cable. Here's some photos. We need to get clamp style cable combs. (These cables are sleeved from the factory)

PXL_20230503_162238148.thumb.jpg.56ec5230d0602df05415a33780f15b9f.jpg

PXL_20230503_162753266.thumb.jpg.3586a0e90d0c27609859d369f665d617.jpg

Ran the cable from above like UltraMega suggested.

Unfortunately, I went to try benchmarking with it and again, my 2nd CCD is not boosting past 5200MHz in 3dmark11, Vantage, 06 etc. for HWBOT. Updated bios. Reset power plans. Tried 1usmus Ryzen Optimzed Balanced power plan.

Last time I tried 3dmark11 it was working fine and the 2nd CCD was boosting to 5625MHz on like 6 threads at once, now it will only go to 5225MHz.

They really shouldn't advertise a chip boosting to 5650MHz when it does so when it feels like it and isn't reliable.

I guess I will be waiting for a fix.

The good news is my rig posts way faster with the last bios update I just did, my monster memory oc still works, and my system should be good to/safe to fold on again 24/7 without catching fire. I hope.

Better video of the RGB lighting in my rig. Noise is from a dehumidifier near it:

Also got some cable combs coming tomorrow for the 12VHPWR and ATX 24 pin that we're going to put in.

Ai Crystal is getting some upgrades soon. Will probably be installed next weekend. I'm so excited. Thank you honey! 💕

EK Nucleus dark 360mm radiator that doesn't have a snakes nest of wires running off it like my H150i. Was recently reviewed here by Mr. Fox:

REVIEWS.EXTREMEHW.NET

EK have bought to market another AIO to add to their portfolio, the EK Nucleus AIO CR360 Dark. How does it fair...

Also since installing this will require taking my GPU out and board out to mount a backplate from EK on it, I figured it'd be a good time to get:

Crucial T700 1TB gen 5 nvme m.2 drive to replace my old Samsung 970 Evo 512GB gen 3 drive. The larger Crucial drive should allow me to have both FH5 and FH4 installed at the same time as well as every 3dmark benchmark ever and Superposition. With room to spare.

I will have to do a lot of work installing Win10 and Linux and reconfiguring both, it will take a lot of work but both Windows and Mint will have way more space. I know the drive won't actually be 1tb, but the overall plan is to give Linux 200GB which will allow for more Timeshift backups, and the rest to Windows.

So I upgraded from a Samsung 970 Evo Gen3 M.2 drive to a Crucial T700 Gen 5 M.2 drive. Unfortunately, my Linux dd backup had errors while imaging the 970 Evo, and though it made an img, when I loaded it onto the new drive and looked at gparted all the ext4 partitions were showing as "unknown". Meaning, I've had to reinstall and configure Win10 and now will be doing the same with Linux.

However, here is the performance increase. This should help greatly with load times in Forza Horizon 4 and 5. And I have enough room to have both at once.

Samsung 970 Evo:

crystaldiskmark970evo.png.49d2110459bd84a23d00d612a5852955.png

Crucial T700:

Awesome improvement.

What's going on with the sequential write speeds? Those are obviously way off where they should be.

That also reminds me that I should benchmark my SSDs. I never did that after completing my build.
