DIY NAS/HomeServer.... Help in picking parts....

So here the Progress so far:

I was able to buy the following used parts:

Fractal Design Ion+ 660W Platinum for ca. 40 EUR with a valid waranty till 14.1.2032 :applaud: (it has all i wanted - platinum certification, eco -no fan mode and enough power) And after a small research they apear to be not bad at all and for this price with waranty i had not much to think about....

Fractal Design Torrent Compact White TG Clear - for 87.75 EUR in an auction - but in a mint condition... But missing some extra parts like the conversion KIT for the 140/120 mm fans... but i anyway wanted to go with the 180mm ones so no problem as well..

SEDNA - 2.5" / 3.5" Hard Disk Rubber Stand ( 12 set / package ) for 79.99 USD at their online store with free shipping - had to pay customs about 32 USD it was still cheaper than if i would buy it from Amazon where the total cost was 141 USD.... IDK how for you folks but i saved a bit ...

Now i dusted my old MSI Z87-G55 mobo with some Kingstone 8GB RAM and an G3260 dualcore processor cooled by my TR - True spirit power  😄 Paired with an R290 TriX GPU 😄

So for playing arround the mobo cpu combo are for sure enough, but for the real deal im now thinking about to retire my current system and use it for this project.

So it would be MSI Z490 Godlike with an 10900K and 32 GB ddr4 ram.. But now my thoughts:

1, Is it meanigfull to update now? and if 14900K or AM5?

2, The current platform would deliver Wifi conectivity - paired with a 2,5G and 10G LAN conector

3, 10900K should be enough for my usecase scenario with 10 cores... and if i down clock and underwolt it the True spirit will kep it quet and chill..

4, plenty M2 and PCIE conectivity...

5, 2x thunderbolt 3 for conecting an external GPU for folding 😛

6, its my own HW so no doubts about the state of it..

any chance on moving away from TrueNAS and moving to a "true" Hypervisor like ESXi or Proxmox? Then you might want to look for a board with good IMMOU groups.

Doesn't really matter for TrueNAS + a few simple containers but if you want to virtualize all the things then it will. I tried moving my server to Proxmox but my board puts everything useful in one group 😞

consumer boards are all over the place and price doesn't really effect how good/bad the groups are (there are ~$120 boards with better groups than >$200) so it might be worth considering at least

@The Pook - how do i find out if the godlike has good IMMOU groups?

Please share with me your thoughs, ideas, recomendations 🙂

Thank you.

I do the same thing. When I upgrade my main system, the old parts -> server.

Unless you need some specialized hardware/feature for x reason that your main rig doesn't have/support then I'd just go that route. Cheaper 🙃

if you don't have the board then you gotta Google and hope someone already posted the IOMMU groups.

if you already have a board then follow the first 2 steps:

you can work around some shite groupings via ACS but if it's your 1st server (or if you just want less headache) I'd avoid it if possible. There's also some security risks with ACS but it shouldn't really matter for home use.

once im home ill take a look and lets see if if i get the infomation the board..

So now as you motivated me a bit to make an upgrade i would like to open the Question 14900K vs 13900K vs AM5 - any advice? BTW any info if EVGA is going out of MOBO business?  or should i start a new thread?

for the beginning it will be for sure just a nas and "Media" server..  Maybee later to hook up on it some cameras, but not expecting to run any sites, or hosting anything..

Intel has QuickSync and DDR4 support, AMD has ECC, more PCIe lanes, and lower power consumption. What do you care about more? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Unless you know you're going to run something intensive, you won't need as much as you think you do. My 8700K is my NAS and has 6+ VMs doing various things. Over the past 280 hours it's only averaged 1.6 Ghz at 4% load and 6W...
