Looking to buy a new TV, Help?

Recommended Posts

So I would really like to upgrade the tv that our ps5 is hooked up to, its currenylt on a 2016 era 55in 1080p LG that is horrible.

I don't really want to go much higher than $500

55in is kinda the hard requirement

would like 4k

would like HDR

I've looked through microcenter, best buy and walmart(lol), ther seems to be quite a few options, but it's hard to narrow down which one I should actually buy.

Picture of the spot it will be going in

Here's a Rtings custom-filtered list of 2023-24 55" models under $600 sorted by ascending price.

Out of the options on that list, I would not consider Roku because of their anti-consumer business practices. TCL seems to have the best TV in the class by far, but I don't trust Chinese electronics that can connect to the Internet, so I'd make sure it functions as a dumb TV. I mean, I'd block a Sony, Samsung, or LG as well, but I'd be even less willing to let a Chinese brand phone home.

TCL and Roku are the same company in all but brand name.  They partnered so Roku does the software platform.  TCL's TV's are less expensive because their data policy is basically: We collect all data.  We will sell your data, we will buy your data for a more complete profile.

I guess that makes the Samsung Q60C the best less anti-consumer option. All my QN85A does is show a dialog to accept terms and conditions for connecting online when I turn it on, but I can decline or it also goes away on its own after a few seconds like a splash screen.

Personally I wouldn't buy anything other than a Samsung or LG TV. So many people go for the budget TV's or the entry level TVs. I won't buy entry level Samsung or LG TVs either. There is something to be said about you get what you pay for. And always go for quality over screen size. For me, Mini-LED is the way to go until OLED can fix the screen burn and lower the cost.  I'm not sure there are any brands that dont sell your data anymore. Privacy seems to be a thing of the past.

My livingroom TV is Samsung 85" Neo QLED 4K Smart TV (QN85QN85CAFXZA). And I use Govee Backlighting and have a JBL 500 soundbar.

I've got a basic model Vizio 4k, HDR, 70" LED tv myself.  No problems to report, picture quality is great from what I can tell.  Have you tried just going to a local Best Buy or something and taking a look at what they have in person?  I tend to prioritize sound quality over picture quality though myself.

As far as I know, these TVs aren't "always-on" like Battle.net or cloud apps, so I would imagine that it should be fine.

Personally, I'd avoid Roku at all costs because of that patent for showing ads while no motion is detected on screen. They may not have implemented it yet, and they may not be able to implement it if you don't give them access to push OTA updates, but I wouldn't be surprised if the code is already in their firmware. I have infinitely less trust in Roku than I do with Asus motherboards and their damn Armoury Crate default-on switch in the BIOS. As much as I've griped about my motherboard, I don't think Asus intentionally disrespects their users like Roku does.

The TCL Q7 that Rtings rated well in my link appears to have Google TV for its OS instead of Roku TV, so it seems that Roku has nothing to do with that model or any current TCL TVs anymore.

Beyond data privacy, I'm not convinced of the build quality, QC, or sales support of the Chinese TV brands. From what I've read, Hisense build quality is awful. I haven't read about the same issues with TCL, but they're not established like legacy brands in the space.

As far as a retail experience, I'd also consider shopping at Costco and leveraging their 90-day return policy by playing panel lottery if necessary. I get the sense that shopping for budget TVs isn't too dissimilar from shopping for ultrawide monitors. QC seems severely lacking in either segment.

For budget reasons I have purchased with a couple of family members TCL units, I cannot recall the model numbers but for the price I was very impressed with the build quality, I/O and the OS layout and functionality (Google). For that reason I purchased a new TV yesterday to replace a dying one I have had to put up with for a while. Going from prior experience and the positive reviews, I picked up the TCL C805 50"  for £569.

After using the TCL units, I quickly had to ask what the bugger names offered, such as Samsung and Sony, and frankly they offered nothing above and beyond from the TCL units and the TCL units are kinder on the wallet.

I don't really think burn-in is anywhere near the problem it used to be on LG WOLED displays. QD-OLED sounds like it still has some issues.

But at this point I can report that after almost 2 years of everyday usage on my 48" C1, there's still no burn in and I don't even hide my taskbar or desktop icons.

To add to Enterprise's post, my tabletop group recently bought a TCL to use for Foundry VTT that we setup at the end of our table for our Pathfinder 2E games. Honestly for the price its really nice and looks great.
