Recommended Posts

Premium Platinum - Lifetime

Hey everyone,

soon the 2024 HWBot Team Cup will start again.
If you feel like helping the EHW team with a few benchmarks and you haven't signed up already, make sure to DM me!
We can talk about what hardware we are still looking for and I can add you to the spreadsheet.

Feel free to discuss the competition, rules and other related subjects here but know that the other teams are always lurking in the shadows 🥷

Did go ahead and pick up a P55 board for the competition and then found the rest of what I had that would qualify.

I'll try to participate on AM4 with a 5900x if allowed. Do any of the Intel stages include Kaby Lake i5s? Because that's the other rig I have. My personal rig doesn't qualify for AM5 being X3D.

Thanks for sharing. Yes, this is awesome, I guess I will be doing my mom's i5 box. It only has 3000MHz ram, but I have settings written down from when I tuned and overclocked it. It can do 5GHz for benching but daily it gets run at 4.5.

So, because my mom's Kaby Lake box has some ancient form of Hynix DDR4 that won't overclock at all, I ordered some of this:

Single rank B-Die, 16GB. We actually got a kit of it off eBay for $30. Including box.

So my question is, what speeds can I reasonably expect to get on Kaby Lake with this memory? Do I need to mess with uncore at all? Do I need to up IMC voltage and to what? What should I aim for? I'm pretty good at Ryzen memory OC but never really done Intel.

Can Avacado help? @Avacado

Thanks everyone. Just want to oc the memory as much as possible but I need a starting point to aim for.

I don't have any Kaby lake systems so IDK specifics of what you should try, but I have several B-die kits and they do pretty good on intel. I am not a RAM OC guy at all and easily took 32GB 3200c14 dual rank kits up to 4200c16. I need to see what my 16GB Royal kit will really do. Just running XMP 4800C17 currently.

What I'm getting is 3200MHz c14-14-14. I run the same kit in @bridgypoos rig at 3733MHz 16-16-16. I've run it at 4266MHz c19 before out of ratio just to test, and it was like 15 dividers higher than what it's rated for.

I'm wondering if when you ran 4200c16 if you tweaked secondary and tertiary timings at all, or just set the primaries and speed. Also what processor/gen you were on. Wondering if you upped IMC voltage at all too.

I did tweak all the timings and upped voltage. No idea what they were off the top of my head. I probably still have that profile saved in the motherboard though. I can't check right now since I'm in South Carolina for work. This was on 10th/11th gen. 10850K, 11600K, 11900K. Like I said I don't have kaby lake, just was saying that Intel seems to clock well with those B-die sticks.

I found a really good overclocking guide for Kaby Lake that includes memory and uncore OC, and has suggested values for overclocking ram for the CPU System Agent Voltage as well as the VCCIO voltage, so it gives me a rough idea how much to increase them to try and get a high, stable RAM OC.

Man, I really don't have anything to compete with and I missed out last time due to simply forgetting.

For the AMD cpu they mention AM3 cpu's - I'm assuming no AM3+?  I'd love to use my FX-9590 for that 3 core event...  That said, I'd imagine they'd be ok with using an AM3 cpu in a AM3+ mobo?

You'd need to buy and throw in a Phenom II x3 720 BE or something then, and overclock it. 🙂

Team cup is often a display of who has the most old crap. Having all the subs filled in every category is worth more points than just having really good subs in a few categories.

Even if we did have coverage of that category with better CPUs, still nothing wrong with running the Athlon. If a better sub gets taken down for some reason, its good to have backups.

Those Athlons had no L3 cache. The Phenoms do.

I get your point though. 🙂

Would be best to use a Phenom II based chip because of the L3 cache.

You can always unlock cores but you cannot disable cores on any benchmarks where core count itself matters towards the result/score.
That much I can tell you.

So. For the Kaby Lake i5 Cinebench competition, I bought some G.skill Flare X B-Die for the system. Hard fail. It is 3200 14-14-14 but in my wife's 5900x rig with the same kit it does 3733 and I even OCed it out of ratio to 4266 once.

With the Kaby Lake setup (see "mom's rig" in my signature), and some timings I found, it wouldn't do 3800 let alone 4000, which is what I was hoping for. Unfortunately the highest it clocks is 3333MHz 14-14-14-35.

The system will do 5GHz but with a Thermalright low profile blow-down cooler, it was hitting 90c+ and said it was throttling running Cinebench, but I didn't actually see the core clocks drop at all in hwinfo64.

I'll have to try 5ghz realtime priority and 4.8ghz as well and see which score is better, and then submit the better one.

Speaking of which, isn't the competition starting today???

Comp has started, first subs in 🙂

These newer Flare X sticks are pretty good, so seems like limited by CPU or more likely BIOS auto values. From my experience ASUS Z170/Z270 boards have pretty much non-POST auto values when >DDR4 3600 (at least compared to MSI).

Did you try adjusting VCCIO/VCCSA? The values from the guide you posted are pretty good, SA can go higher for tighter timings (only for benching!).

A starting point to boot something DDR4 >3600 on Sky/Kaby could be:

  • ~1.15-1.25V IO and ~1.35-1.45V SA, that should be good for 3733-4000 even with relatively tight timings.
    • Too high IO is worse
    • Higher SA = tighter timings possible
  • Manually set tCL to like 16 and tCWL(tWL) to tCL-2.
  • Don't forget to loosen tCCD_L to 8 or sometimes need to set tRDWR_xx to the same value as tCL for a safe value to tighten later.

Good luck and happy TC!
