The brass balls on these guys: OpenAI complains that DeepSeek has been using its data...

OpenAI, the company behind the internet-scraping ChatGPT large language model (LLM), has complained that the new Chinese AI assistant DeepSeek has been copying its models. The emergence of DeepSeek, an AI LLM that was apparently developed at a fraction of the cost of other models but boasts comparable performance, has sent shares in AI-focused tech firms like Nvidia tumbling.

A new Bloomberg report says Microsoft, which is a major investor in OpenAI, is investigating whether OpenAI's data has been exfiltrated on a large scale by DeepSeek. An OpenAI license allows developers access to the OpenAI API so it can be plugged into other software. The implication is that DeepSeek has been trained on OpenAI responses during its development.

"There's substantial evidence that what DeepSeek did here is they distilled the knowledge out of OpenAI's models and I don’t think OpenAI is very happy about this,” said the US administration's new 'AI and crypto czar' David Sacks. "I think one of the things you're going to see over the next few months is our leading AI companies taking steps to try and prevent distillation... That would definitely slow down some of these copycat models."

Just China doing what they do.  The irony is OpenAI was doing it too.

They all do the same thing. If China does it, it’s a national threat. If the US does it, it’s the prowess of ingenuity and the American dream. Same crap with Tiktok or anything else. Tiktok stands to outpace Youtube in ad revenue and all of a sudden, it’s a national security threat, unless US owns and takes the profits of course.

Where does “Open” AI, this “non-profit” get its data from? Surely they’re playing by the “rules”? Oh wait, it’s all unregulated and it’s just a race to make as much money as possible and then dip when lawmakers grasp how to minimize complete and utter abuse of our data.

/end rant

So,the creators of a program that swipes protected content off the web and allows people to make their own tweaked versions of the content without paying anything to the original content creator is NOW crying that another program is coping their content? Ironic to say the least, and a fitting form of karma.

My understanding is its a bitter deeper than this.  I read an article that alleges that they were using developer openai accounts to link their models and just leech off and learn from the ai models.  So they didn't have to train their models.

They're all scum

ARSTECHNICA.COM

Meta’s alleged torrenting and seeding of pirated books complicates copyright case.

Annndd? How's that much different from just scanning the entire web and saying everything there is fair game to re-use and charge for it even if it was a copyrighted image?(Remember they tried that at first?)

Supposedly deepseek sometimes called itself ChatGPT.  That seems to have been fixed.

AI training data needs to be open source.  As long as that stays hidden I don't trust AI.

They won't do that because they are busy stealing everything they can feed it to make it super intelligence.  A level of intelligence we simply do not comprehend.

This is where someone needs to tell them to slow down and do things responsibly.  They need to start respecting copyright, show their training material and have a bit of compassion.
