AMD Allegedly Delaying Ryzen 4000 Series ‘Zen 3’ CPUs To 2021

Word out of Taiwan is that AMD has decided to delay the launch of its Zen 3 based Ryzen 4000 CPU series from September 2020 to early 2021. This is not because of any technical difficulty but simply due to consistently strong demand for Ryzen 3000 series and lack of competition from Intel. Considering the magnitude of this leak and because it contradicts earlier reports, we have marked this post as a rumor. Caution is advised. That said, Digitimes is one of the most reliable newspapers in Taiwan when it comes to tech and has extensive industry sources so this might just turn out to be true regardless.

I think it could be likely, they might as well cash in on the 3000 series while they can. Though you could argue they should release anyway in order to punish Intel into the ground.

...Interesting ! While Ryzen4K 'ES' are apparently out there per below, it is still relatively hard to even find AMD peripherals such as several X570 models and some Ryzen3Ks. As long as there's excess demand (mixed w/ reduced supply) for Ryzen3K, AMD can afford to delay the next gen...this would also somewhat fit with the Ryzen3K 'XT' refresh just announced.

...I am also wondering how fierce the competition is @ TSMC for current and near-future nodes, with both Intel and Global Foundries having problems with mass production of sub / 10nm. Ultimately, the must also affect AMD's roll-out plans

That is a good point, I forgot about the XT refresh. I think they will be delaying the 4000 series then as there is no point in releasing this refresh and then going straight into the next gen. Personally I think the XT series is silly enough as it is, no need for a refresh at this point.

Yeah, I guess the 'silly season' on rumours is shifting to high gear. Some '''reliable sources''' claim a delay of Ryzen4K to 2021, while others quote AMD as saying 'not true'. In any case, Ryzen3K 'XT' may have come about as yields are getting quite good on the 7nm process, so a quick relabel, a price increase, and voila, extra revenue for AMD. And just in case, Ryzen4k really does delay, the XT refresh will help to bridge

  • Thanks 1

Yeah the XT refresh is a cash grab and it will work as people love the XT naming and will probably just but it because of that lol
