A window regulator on the E46 finally kicked the bucket after 201K+ miles. Instead of the window going down smoothly, it just jerked around and made a loud, splendid crunching sound. That was nice. Just in time for the hurricane too.

Starting to have some fun with the VW Alltrack as well. New shift knob went in last weekend since I wasn't terribly fond of the original. Tint scheduled for tomorrow afternoon and weather permitting, I'll install a JB4 and get that set up on Saturday.

  • 3 months later...

BMW continues to knock it out of the park with their new styling direction.

Actually though, I don't mind the exterior too much, but I'm definitely not a fan either. Personally I find that interior to be terrible though; funnily enough their previous generation of interiors was one of my favorite out of any make. Ah well.

It looks like they're trying to go back to their old styling, but it's not really working

This type of grille only works on that type of body style. What they've done, is made what I imagine a 2019 Lexus IS F would look like if Rockstar made a version of it for GTA.

Can we go back to cars like that? (with more safety equipment)
It just looks so perfect :classic_love:

BMW tried to defend thing by saying "When it comes to innovative design, it's very common for some to find it unusual and odd" and they are right in that. Toyota/Lexus as well as Mazda manage to create innovative design that people do like, but some don't. I've not seen a single person outside of BMW yet say any of these new designs are good looking. It's universally hated.

The iX is also the first car I've ever seen that has fake fake grilles. I didn't put "fake" in there twice by accident.

Unfortunately, safety equipment is why a lot of cars today look like they do. That along with aerodynamics.

Haha, it is true that people have mixed opinions about most of the innovative designs. But now everyone who knows that I love BMW's keeps bugging me about those new designs :classic_sad:

Just look at those wheel arches, isn't that enough aerodynamics for you? :classic_biggrin:
I totally understand the way it goes, and most of the modern cars look pretty good because we are used to those designs.
Imagine someone looking at those cars 50 years ago, I don't think they would like them..

Seconding what you guys said. All I've heard is basically that enthusiasts hate them, but most people just don't care as long as it's a BMW. Haven't heard of anybody that actually likes them. Critically though, because the vast majority of people don't really care and they just see a new car, they'll still sell very, very well I expect.

Pretty much the last BMW I really liked the look of was the F22 2 series/F87 M2. I'm pretty neutral about the G06 X6 and G07 X7, and I know those are controversial. Maybe it's just because I spend so much time around them. To my understanding the facelift G01 and G02 (X3 and X4 respectively) are getting the new styling treatment with the diamond grille pattern seen on the G20 3 series, the new Z4, and others, and that doesn't sound great to me. Only seen pictures with camo wrap so I don't actually know what they look like.

I don't know that these designs ever become liked so much as normalized. A lot of people hated the Lexus grille at first and I still think it's hideous today. If anything, it got worse as newer model refreshes led to bigger grilles. The difference is that there are more of those cars on the road now.

I think Toyota/Lexus designs have been awful ever since the 4th gen GS. The 2013 GS was just bland and generic apart from the grille, which was still small at the time. Everything after that was drawn under the influence of hard drugs. Incoherent kinks, creases, and sharp angles are what you draw when you're trying to be edgy (pun intended). The current generation Camry offends me more than any soulless commuter car I've seen before it, especially in the SE and XSE trims with the fake exhaust tips, fake rear bumper vents, nonsensical blackout roofline (XSE), and Predator 2.0 (or Stormtrooper if in white) grille.

Also, I would differentiate between innovative design and incoherent design. Tacking a ridiculous front and rear fascia onto what is an otherwise normal car shape isn't innovative, it's incoherent.

Interesting, the non-car people I've talked to have basically said they don't mind or it looks fine, but they want one because it's a shiny new BMW. Perhaps you associate with people that have better taste and I need new friends, haha.

And that's what BMW are right about. Some do find the newer Lexus/Toyotas unusual and odd. But there are still people out there who really like them. The same can't be said about the recent batches of BMWs.

I'm sure some contrarian is going to find the new BMW design language inoffensive. I think it's a matter of splitting hairs to define what your threshold is for something to be "universally" hated though, but it's still not on the same level as the Fiat Multipla.

I haven't been interested in any new car for nearly a decade now and I'm not in the market for one either, so I could probably criticize contemporary automotive design until the cows come home. What BMW is doing now hardly even registers any emotion in my book because I've become jaded over the past decade by stupid designs from Toyota/Lexus, Nissan, GM, and even Tesla. Seriously, take a cue from Porsche and stop making front fascias that look like someone used the Photoshop eraser tool where the grille would go.

FINALLY found time to get coilovers wrapped up for the Alltrack; I've had parts sitting around for months. Gives it much more of a sports car feel: far stiffer than stock but not really harsh, and at least an inch and a half lower iirc. Still getting quite a bit of roll, but that's probably due to the tall tire sidewalls. Massively less pitch under acceleration now. Love the way it looks too.

Next are wheels, tires, and catback, but all of those will take a while to ship since I got 'em on Black Friday so they're on low stock.

Sup lads, long time since i've been in the OCN thread. I think back then I had just bought my Fiesta ST. Well, turns out that it's true calling was a track slag and that on the roads, I really enjoy crap cars.

This is my £200 daily I picked up. Clutch slips and gears are crunchy. Also had sill rust. I talked to matey boy down the garage and he gave me a clean MOT:

The Focus is a good car for taking stuff to the dump, so also have another shed spec car for taking kids to nursery and shops. This time £1999, done 15k miles since I bought it (on 86k), only needing droplinks and AC belt (both like £90 jobs at garage):

The track slag has grown up. A lot of basic mods... coilovers, LSD, big front mount, mapped, baffled sump bla bla...  It's proven to be an absolutely fantastic little track car though. Cheap to run, cheap to insure and comfortable. Has been on the ring annually for Circuit Days event since 2017 or so and around the UK.

Ofcourse a pc tech forum has gearheads! Here are my two project cars. The Camaro is undergoing a full resto now. Dismantling in progress.

Computers to cars seems to be the natural progression. Although I went from cars to computers back to cars. I wouldn't even know what hardware I'd have if it weren't for my sigrig.
