NVIDIA allegedly cancels its December launch of GeForce RTX 3080 20GB and RTX 3070 16GB. This still very fresh information comes from two independent sources. Technically GeForce RTX 3080 20GB and RTX 3070 16GB could launch at a later time, but the information that we have clearly stated that those SKUs have been canceled, not postponed. NVIDIA has already canceled its RTX 3070 Ti model (PG141 SKU 0), so the RTX 3070 16GB (PG141 SKU5) and RTX 3080 20GB (PG132 SKU20) will be joining the list.

 

The GeForce RTX 3080 20GB was expected to be a response to AMD Radeon RX 6900/6800 series featuring Navi 21 GPU. All three AMD SKUs will feature 16GB of memory, leaving NVIDIA with a smaller frame buffer to compete with.

 

We do not know the official reason for the cancellation. The RTX 3080 20GB might have been scrapped due to low GDDR6X yield issues, one source claims. The reason behind RTX 3070 16GB cancellation is unknown (this SKU uses GDDR6 memory).

To be honest these are the cards that SHOULD have been released on launch, not the variants available in there place now. Dumb move for the 3080 to be so Vram gimped as it is. As others, waiting until 2021 before I pick up a 3090, refuse to pick up a 3080 if it remains in its Vram gimped state as for me that is not an upgrade.

The 30XX series launch was now, very obviously in hindsight, a stop gap measure against AMD and the impending Big Navi. 

 

I make no allusions of Big Navi's supremacy in performance, but it appears that it is close, and nVidia seems to know this. Hence this hasty "launch" of the 30XX series with not but a few cards to sell, on a stop gap Samsung 8nm, with a suboptimal VRAM configuration. 

 

AMD may not have the oft spoke of "mindshare" in the GPU segment, but I can't help to think that AMD's ascendancy in CPUs and computing in general, is in the mind of enthusiasts everywhere and that this can't but bleed into the GPU side of things if AMD has something worthwhile on offer.

Something really went sideways with Ampere. 

AMD should capitalize on this because opportunities of the sort don't come around often.

I'll be waiting next week to see what AMD announces. If they have availability and the performance I'm sold and I'll sell both my 1080ti and my 1080 and replace them with AMD cards.

If big navi is within 10% on price and performance and I can buy it without an issue I probably will.  The only thing that might stop me is if it just gets destroyed on ray tracing.  I don't upgrade super often so I would plan to use it for most likely two generations.

Same. My 1080ti and 980ti are getting just a tad long in the tooth, though, the 1080ti is still a beast!! I put my 5700XT in my son's computer, though he just left for the Navy, so I need to repurpose it.  But with VR flight simming becoming my primary gaming focus, I definitely need more grunt for DCS and the upcoming VR mode for FS2020.

Ampere obviously failed to launch as expected. Low numbers, and now Nvidia is scrambling to adjust. Part of me feels that Nvidia is pretty much going to scrap any new Ampere releases that doesn't focus on cut down dies, and focus on the next gen. Super/Ti series isn't happening this gen. I think Ampere is going to be a 1 year product.

I just wish that AMD did as well in hardware acceleration as Nvidia with respects to transcoding and other accelerated applications. Cuda is still king in this area and that also factors into my buying decisions, otherwise I would be on AMD so fast.

Fortunately for me, I don't do much hobby/work at home anymore. Primarily gaming, which for me is flight simming and wargaming. So whilst my cpu; a 3900XT is kind of out of a job, my next GPU is going to be purchased only for max gaming performance for a "reasonable" price.

 

I do understand the need though.

Well for you it is a no brainer if AMD bring their game and at a realistic price, the latter which in my mind is a given compared to Nvidia.

That's essentially how I see it. Chances of going AMD this time for a GPU is near 100% if they're anywhere in the ballpark with Ampere. Last AMD card I used for my main rig was a 290. Went with 980 ti and 1080ti after. I'm looking forward to the switch, if I'm honest. I don't like to stay in one camp for too long. That's why I suspect my next build, CPU wise, will be Intel. Let's just hope they can finally get on track.

You sound like a person who enjoys some form of balance !

 

The only other thing that concerns me with any new AMD GPU is the drivers.Granted I would need to get renewed feedback as have not had an AMD GPU for a good while.

 

Last time I had a poor experience of the drivers.

I have multiple AMD gpu's and drivers haven't been an issue for me. Last nvidia gpu i had was a 1080ti and outside of nvidia surround it seemed o.k. driver wise. The issue for me with Nvidia and AMD drivers, was AMD has a really decent software side of drivers. I like the UI panels for settings and wattman, power tuning, overlay stats like MSI AB etc.. Nvidia drivers seemed dated, basic and lacked many features....

 

Really though people are going to say different things. Drivers for me aren't high on the list after using both and not having much issues...

I know what you mean with respect to the Nvidia driver suite being more "basic". For me, not too much of an issue. Like anything, so long as its doing its job and they are stable, I am happy.

...just a hunch, but I think AMD / big Navi might pleasantly surprise a lot of folks. 'News' and leaks were very tied down this time (first real performance leaks just a few days ago), as was advanced marketing hype by AMD...sounds like Lisa Su really put a  control lid on it. I think they're very serious about 'pulling another Ryzen' surprise, but this time with NVidia in their cross-hairs.

I am hoping so. Did see an article today :https://www.thefpsreview.com/2020/10/23/amd-radeon-rx-6800-xt-edges-out-nvidia-geforce-rtx-3080-in-new-benchmarks/

 

If that is true then that is great...if the 6900XT can match the 3080 for the most part, then 6900XTX may be the card to have.

Very interesting, I'm now even more curious about what effect Big Navi will have now.

 

I still stand where I have been with the driver debate. Been a while since I've mained AMD, but I never had major issues during the few years that I did. Nvidia GFE has been a bit of a heaping pile of trash every time I've used it, and updates fail half the time as well. Nvidia control panel is functional enough, but Surround settings are finicky and it looks like it's from 2008. Could be better, could be worse. Interesting that I seem to have had such a different experience from others.

 

Part of me wants to go back to AMD for a bit just to see how things are, but that's really hard for me to justify since folding performance is a fairly large consideration for me when shopping for GPUs these days.

Launch availability won't matter to me as I am not building for a few months, but Ampere is a hot mess as far as I am concerned as an architecture and being on Samsung "8"nm. Sure, like Fermi prior, it performs, but it's got its problems and Nvidia is sandbagging on VRAM.

 

If Big Navi meets, is close to, or beats Ampere and is priced well, I will be jumping back over to Radeon for my next build, no problem. I've been on two Nvidia cards since my last Radeon cards. I'm ready.

 

I expect Ampere to refresh on 7nm and that will help. It won't be a magic bullet, but I expect it will alleviate some issues they have being on "8"nm from a power and yields perspective, and maybe clocks too. I think it's Fermi 1 to Fermi 2 all over again.

 

AdoredTV did an interesting analysis on VRAM going back to Fermi and how we generally saw a doubling for each tier each new generation. And Ti cards were typically half of a Titan. Then it started to get weird with Pascal and going into Turing and Ampere hasn't really progressed and if their marketing is believed can be seen as a regression if the 3080 is supposed to be a replacement for the 2080 Ti (Nvidia does keep calling 3080 their new "flagship" yet continually compares it to the 2080 on charts more than 2080 Ti which was flagship of last gen). More credence that the 3090 is a replacement for the 2080 Ti, not the Titan RTX, while having a $300 price hike.
