Yeeting your way through the licenses is surprisingly easy in iRacing. It took me 3 weeks to get from rookies to A license. I did see someone on Reddit complain about how difficult it is to get promoted. He said he was stuck in rookies for 2 years. He couldn't understand why, and someone asked how he was still stuck in rookies for that long and he replied with "I always win or die trying."

Yeah, after hitting C, I've come to realize it is indeed pretty easy. Just do a few longer races and keep it clean, and you're there. I got 0.63 SR from my last IMSA race. I'm wondering if I should do a few Le Mans races or something and just go ahead and hit A, then stick to D and C class series for the rest of the season.

Met a couple guys like that too, one used to be on our FSAE team. Said iRacing as a whole was a garbage game because of the safety rating system, and that it was impossible to get out of rookies because everyone keeps crashing into you. He was one of "those guys" so I could already tell that wasn't entirely true, and when I actually started iRacing it was clear he was just driving completely incorrectly.

Much better hardware, VR and 5 years more experience and the time difference negligible. Also I recorded the wrong lap for the up to date one.

For what it's worth, the more recent driving looks a lot smoother and you're probably more consistent as a result.

Some of you may have seen my post in the Last Purchase thread, but my order with some new Fanatec stuff was delayed because stuff that I bought wasn't actually in stock when I ordered it, despite saying it was available. Regardless, I cancelled that order and made a new one with the CSL 1.1 instead of the Clubsport V2.5 hub and the same CSL pedals (will get the loadcell later, just running two pedals for now) and the Formula V2 wheel with the Podium paddle upgrade. Showed up today and set everything up. I'm really enjoying it so far, mainly did some testing in iRacing. Compared to the G29, I'm really impressed with how smooth and quiet everything is, and the wheel is excellent. Really nice to see they made it out of actual carbon fiber, as someone who makes that stuff for my FSAE team. Next thing on the list is setting up the dual clutch paddles for theoretically faster launches. Should be a cool feature.

Anyone else ever done or regularly does iRacing special events? Did the 24 Hours of Le Mans this past weekend as my first special event with just three people total. Pit lane start to avoid early carnage, so we started around 51st out of 55 I think. We were 27th by the end of the first hour and finished 15th. Was a great experience, but the biggest lesson learned was to do 24 hour races with at least four, maybe five, drivers.

I wanted to do the 24hr of Le Mans last year with Alex, Alex couldn't make it to the start, I tried it anyway on my own and got taken out within the first 2 minutes because someone decided to try to overtake me by going off the track which made them lose control and crash into me which was somehow my fault. The car was completely destroyed, I think it had something like 6 hours repair time so I just abandoned it.

Yeah something similar happened in our iLMS Le Mans 6 hour the weekend before. I started, lap two someone was serving a slowdown way off to the side of the track after missing the second Mulsanne chicane, and they lost control and slid sideways in front of me. He was out of my peripheral vision up until he was right in my face so I had zero time to react. At least 30 minutes of repairs.

Anyone tried the new GT4 DLC for ACC? I have looked at it and it does seem fairly decent, but it's too expensive IMO. It cost more than all 3 Porsche Packs for AC combined while having less vehicles at similar quality. I'm going to buy it, just not at full price.

Codemasters just killed the series. If PCARS 3 was sold under a different name as a spinoff such as "Project CARS: Shift", I think it would have done a lot better than this. Having less players than PCARS 1 is just embarrassing.

Agreed. The way they marketed it didn't really improve the situation much for themselves either.

I think Jimmy Broadbent is one of the first sim racers that BMW has taken seriously, I'm pretty sure he's driving for BMW now. Not sure what class because he started just before COVID became a world-wide issue. It's how he managed to get access to BMWs simulator

In other news that's not very important, I've bought a PS3, GT5 and GT6 now that I have a decent wheel. I'll also finally get to use an SSD in a PS3 now that they're a reasonable price. The last time I had a PS3, a 60GB SSD was around £250-£300 so it really wasn't worth the investment. Now, you can get a 250GB SSD for sub-£25 so I've gone ahead and bought an SSD for it as well. It's a shame the PS3 won't be able to make full use of it. Even the last gen PS3 used SATA 2 so it can't take full advantage of modern SSDs.

I bought a PS3 again. GT5 is okay with a T300RS, the ffb is super weak but it's still there and good enough. It doesn't have native T300RS wheel support though so that's probably why. You do have to use the T500RS profile in order to use it. 0 issues with it with the exception of the weak ffb. It's great with GT6 but that's not really surprising because the T300RS is the official Gran Turismo 6 wheel.

Been a while since this thread has seen the light of day.

Finally got my CSL DD a few days ago after ordering it in late January or early February if I remember correctly. Set it up last night, had some issues at first but I think we're good to go. Feels pretty good, but I've cranked the FFB up so it'll take some getting used to. Unfortunately all of the iRacing series I'm normally interested in are at pretty crap tracks this week so I don't have that much motivation. Next week should be better.

Also, after I move to a new apartment over the summer, I think I'm going to splurge on an 80/20 monitor stand. The one I designed and cobbled together works but it's a massive pain to adjust, and I can't bring the side monitors close to me at much of an angle. Takes up an ungodly amount of space currently.

Why not VR for iRacing? Or any racing sim in general. It really is a game changer, I find it very hard to go back to non-VR sim racing. Only exception is GT7, mostly because it's not on PC and partly because I refuse to buy a PSVR when I already have an Index.

Also I don't think GT7 does VR either which is strange because GT Sport does. Sony are really making VR look like a gimmick. It does seem like they've abandoned it entirely for the PS5, although existing PSVR headsets do work on it.

I used an Oculus Rift CV1 for a couple years and actually switched back. VR is less consistent and has more small issues, UI/data display is much more limited, I live alone so if I've got headphones on I'm more comfortable at least having one of my major senses in reality, I can get a lot more detail on distant vehicles with monitors, and it's a little more fatiguing for longer stints/races. Also I do occasionally live stream, and monitors are a lot more stream-friendly, I've found. Obviously for some people, those aren't issues, but that's been my experience. I'm sure with a newer and nicer headset, I'd have a better experience, but my current monitor setup cost about the same and it's fantastic, just as long as I'm not actively adjusting it.

Oh and I get to ogle my fancy wheel.

The Indexs higher res is enough imo. I have no issues reading the UI in games that have official VR support as well as seeing details on the track. @Alex had a Rift CV1 and we compared how much further back we can go from a sign in Assetto Corsa and still be able to read it. I could go a full 5-6 car lengths further than he could before I'd be unable to read it. It was a regular German street sign, so this sort of thing.

For reference, I think the text is about the same size as what's on US street signs.

Dirt Rally 2.0 has VR support. I don't have a VR kit, but I have Drit Rally 2.0. IMO it's one of the best out there in terms of physics. Really feel every bump in the road.

Yeah I had no issues reading the UI, the biggest thing was looking at cars at the end of the straight I'm on and not being able to tell what car/who it is, and general lack of inability to make detailed observations like that.
