twitter AMD Robert Hallock promises Ryzen 5000 undervolting with new functionality

Yesterday AMD released its Ryzen 5000 series codenamed Vermeer based on Zen3 architecture. The series feature up to 16 cores and 32 threads and a boost clock up to 4.9 GHz. We have gathered a long list of Zen3 reviews from various tech websites and YouTube channels, which should hopefully answer most of your questions about the series. However, there were still a few details that AMD wanted to clarify.

AMD’s Robert Hallock provided those details on social media and we thought it might be useful to gather this information in a single post:

 

1) Ryzen 5000 Series doesn’t need a power plan. Don’t expect to see one.

2) Yes, it can clock to DDR4-4000 1:1 if you have a good sample. Upcoming AGESA work will make this easier.

3) But you CAN tweak Ryzen perf vs. power with the Win10 Power & Sleep sider AFTER you install the chipset driver.

4) Is the memory controller the same? YES.

5) Do you need a new AGESA for pre-5000 Series CPUs? No. Not really. Stay on the BIOS you have. Man shrugging

6) What about the VOLTS and the CELSIUSES. WHAT IS NORMAL?!?!!?!

7) What is the best memory to buy?

I see this a lot: “precision boost is automatic overclocking.” No. False. Wrong. Precision Boost is our boost technology. Every processor has a boost technology. But ours is unique in that X THREADS do not equal Y CLOCKS. Why? Because that is SLOW.

9) But Robert, where is undervolting? Answer: IT’S GONE. j/k. Temporarily gone for 5000 series. It’ll be back in an upcoming AGESA with new functionality. It’s gonna be HYPE. Y’aint never seen undervolting quite like this.

This is a lot of information from the previously disabled and hidden Twitter account of Robert Hallock (@Thracks).  Some great news for Ryzen 5000, but I failed yesterday to get any CPU's and see them being scalped already.  I was not expecting as much of a supply issue for Ryzen as they have had a good while to get that ramped up and either AMD wasn't expecting this many current Ryzen owners to want to upgrade, or weren't expecting as many new Ryzen buyers.

This is a lot of information from the previously disabled and hidden Twitter account of Robert Hallock (@Thracks).  Some great news for Ryzen 5000, but I failed yesterday to get any CPU's and see them being scalped already.  I was not expecting as much of a supply issue for Ryzen as they have had a good while to get that ramped up and either AMD wasn't expecting this many current Ryzen owners to want to upgrade, or weren't expecting as many new Ryzen buyers.

 

It is exciting times to be honest. I managed to get a 5950X on pre-order yesterday. All the usual UK retail websites were HAMMERED yesterday, there were a serious amount of people wanting the 5000 series. It was nuts.  Will do some performance bits and piece with it to show the community once I get the new 4000Mhz RAM in for testing and review. It will be a 64gb kit, so pushing those clocks will be a little harder, the motherboard is more than capable (Asrock X570 Aqua) but all depends on silicon lottery at this point.

- Asus Prime X570-Pro

- Corsair 3200 MHz 2x 16 GB (to be added to a same kit to make 32GB

- Sea Sonic Focus Gold 850 W

 

I was really hoping to get a 5900x, but I was refreshing 5900x and 5800x on Amazon, Newegg, Canada Computers and Memory Express

 

Amazon Canada and Newegg Canada went from no stock to out-of-stock instantly, Canada Computers and Memory Express seemed to not even do any online orders and were only doing in-store which is kind of crap because the closest Canada Computers is 4 hour drive from me and in-store stock at various store seemed to all be single digits on the website before store opening time.

 

 

I'm rather disappointed by the lack of stock for a product AMD was hyping this much and had proven great internal benchmarking results.  I get many factors are at play with supply and demand and it's not just a simple analysis, but I'm still allowed my personal opinion gosh darn it!!!

Hard to say, would love to know the numbers regarding first batch stock numbers, maybe even AMD underestimated just how many people would want to grab one of these.
