The Linux/BSD/Open-Source OS Thread

Recommended Posts

It seems like we should at least have a catch-all thread for Linux, BSD based, and other open-source operating systems.  Not sure where this thread will go, but it can at least serve as a landing spot for anyone that has random questions or just wants to share screenshots and/or info about their Linux/BSD/Open-source OS adventures. :D

Currently, everything I have running on bare metal is Linux.  I have FreeBSD, pfense, and Haiku VMs running, but everything else is Linux. My bare metal installs are running Arch, Gentoo, and Debian, along with Debian, CentOS, and Ubuntu VMs for testing.

Resurrection!

I recently learned that Ubuntu Rolling a thing, now most of my machines are running that, except my server of course, that sticks to LTS whenever possible.

Interesting. I didn't know that was really a thing. I wonder how that goes once development hits a stable release. It sounds a bit more like Debian Sid, than an actual install it once update it forever rolling release like Arch or openSUSE Tumbleweed. Has Gnome held up OK or does it frequently break? I've been on Arch for the last decade, but without a DE.  Gnome, or at least the extensions/plugins seem to be the pain point with new releases.

I'm personally on Xubuntu because reasons, so I can't speak for gnome. But yeah, it might be interesting to see what happens when a release becomes stable.

Looking for a sanity check on my overkill home server drive/FS layout.

Below is what I've been testing, and so far, I haven't ran into any issues.

/boot (esp) - 1GB FAT32 partition mirrored (sort of) on 2 nvme SSDs. Primary partition on one SSD with the secondary rsync'd to the primary on changes.

/, /home, etc - Btrfs raid1 on 2x 1TB nvme SSDs

/var - ext4 on 480GB Optane 905p. Containers, running VM images, logs, etc.

/data - Btrfs raid10 on 6x 8TB HDDs. Room to expand to 8 total drives on current HBA

/backups - Btrfs raid1 on 2x 4TB HDDs. Critical backups of other machines/VMs along with snapshots of the host OS.

/victim - md Raid-0 on 4x 1TB nvme SSDs. Steamcache and squid.

/offline - ??? FS on 2x 12TB HDDs (only mounted in hotswap bay while running backups) for offline/cold storage backups.  Leaning towards Btrfs dup, but I'm not super thrilled with the idea of using a single file system for everything.  Probably too paranoid about losing data...

So happy to report that NVidia proprietary driver 495 finally works on Wayland with GBM in KDE 5.23. I had to hunt down over 100 patches, but it all seems to be working rather blissfully smooth:

System Info and Diablo 2 Resurrected running in accelerated XWayland: https://imgur.com/a/kkzOXPr
  1. KWIN_DRM_USE_EGL_STREAMS=0 KWIN_DRM_USE_MODIFIERS=1
Everything is super responsive -- Firefox, LibreOffice, Topaz Gigapixel AI (wine UI is a bit sticky, but GPU acceleration works!), Steam games (Lichdom Battlemage [CryEngine], Age of Empires DE, Doom Eternal), D3, D2R, Plasma desktop.  Played D2R all weekend at 144fps at max settings and not a single crash, unlike with EGLStreams.  I proclaim that Wayland gaming on NVidia is finally here, after 13 arduous long years!

Might as well throw my 2cents in here,

Currently running Anti-X on a Dell optiplex 160

Intel Atom 330 dual-core processor 1.6Ghz

3Gb RAM

160Gb 2.5" HDD

SiS Mirage 3 Graphics chip (this is the pain)

Network 10/100/1000
USB 4 x USB2.0
Serial 1
PS/2 Kybd & mouse

Anti-X is 1 of the few systems to actually be able to play youtube videos in at least 480 without buffering. The problem is finding a driver for the SiS graphics chip. About the max resolution I'm able to get is 1020x768. The old Vista basic drivers allowed 1920x1080.

I think this thread needs a bit more if it will be a landing page for Linux users. at least links to distro's with a brief description or such to help those who are interested but don't know where to start.

Adding a breath of life here.  I have an older desktop with an AMD A8 3870 quad core APU for the processor and an AMD Radeon HD8490 for the graphics card. Here are some versions of Linux that I tried running that ran but with an issue.

Linux Mint Mate = No audio over the video card.

..................Xfce  = After lots of jiggery pokery able to get random audio over the video card out put.(sometimes work, sometimes not)

lubuntu              = No audio over video card.

ALL the above worked fine in the live testing and the HDMI output was fine. Once OS were installed and UPDATED they quit having audio on the video card. The card is below the cutoff of the latest driver that was updated in the LTS releases.

Now we meet Linux Lite, When first installed I had the same issue of no sound and sound device not showing. BUT after running updates and rebooting, my sound device showed and worked automatically. P.S. it updated to kernel 5.15.0.107 ver.#117Ubuntu which is what the others where running unless I forced them to the 6.x kernel. and even that didn't help them. Lite shows a Caicos Driver installed for the card when the others were all using the newer amdgpu driver. maybe they leave older driver in?

Here's the link to their site if anyone needs a low resource using OS that seems to support even some older hardware.

EDIT: Well, a few days later and several updates later and we have broken sound again. 🙄   Edit#2 Re-rebooting seems to make it work when the screen loads.(sometimes I just get a black screen and tv times out.)

Linux Lite is a free easy to use linux based operating system that is suitable for people who are new to linux.

Raspberry Pi - still Raspbian

HTPC - dual boot Debian 12/W11

HyperV - Debian "Server" for PiHole, Plex VM no longer exists (moved to host Server 2022)

shut it Fish, Linux still sucks
