The new place to get your "slave" labor for your electronics plant?

Recommended Posts

Another Apple supplier has been caught doing bad things, First it was Pegatron in China (see engadget link for THAT story)https://www.engadget.com/apple-pegatron-suspension-labor-abuses-china-111030340.html?guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAMK8DrWk3AluDwhZf4CMv9hDzSTengnzC_Am9Mc5fJxuN1-c0NQK6BeOPw8DQoycZymOVqpQBKoqOc4vYkqO7q-94yepcKf4gZDYcBu1dwd1hkhnkIq0v-HmQQ3oCJnCszQjr_4SQxRVWvWhuOUy2OWcGFTLmx8TJgeImi3v0dMr&guccounter=2#:~:text=Apple has suspended one of,work night shifts and overtime.

Then we have Apple moving to India where it seems more of the same starts happening.(it seems all these factories are being run by Taiwanese based corps) Wistron has a plant in India with a major screw-up that forces Apple to suspend their dealings with them until they get their house in order. https://techcrunch.com/2020/12/19/apple-puts-contract-partner-wistron-on-probation-after-violence-at-india-plant/

Meanwhile,Foxconn is all set to open a factory in India(or already has by now) so people won't have to worry about their iPhones coming from China... https://www.indiatvnews.com/business/news-apple-begins-production-of-iphone-11-in-india-make-in-india-636669

Will work conditions be any better? from the example seen at Wistron,I'd guess it'll be the same ole, same ole.....

I don't know why the focus is always on Apple when it comes to these things. Pegatron is also the supplier to Asus, Asrock, Sony, Microsoft, LG, and quite a few others. Wistron is the supplier to Acer, Microsoft, and quite a few others. It's very rare for a factory like these to only be the supplier to one brand. Every single tech company is responsible for this. Every single tech company knows this is going on, but Apple is the only one to suspend their contracts with the suppliers.

While it seems to point a bad finger towards Apple, note the links include the info that Apple took action against these manufacturers. My main point was that even though the companies were moving to India, they were STILL using the same type of business practices as before. The reason Apple was the company mentioned instead of 1 of the others,is because the riot at the iPhone plant was what brought the story to my attention. Edit: This is a better story than the previous link that wanted a trial...  https://techcrunch.com/2020/12/19/apple-puts-contract-partner-wistron-on-probation-after-violence-at-india-plant/

It's a sad world when companies turn a blind eye to the poor working conditions. I think these companies forget how important the little guy is to their operations and should do more these chaps.

If that were the case, then it would be done. Long term, the machines are much cheaper than paying wages.

Part of the problem is that big-tech tend to push their suppliers in those countries very, very hard on per-unit cost, given our demands for masses of cheaper consumer goods. Said suppliers cut corners (child labour, health and welfare, environmental) to get & keep big-tech contracts and a bigger margin.

The reason Apple is singled out is two fold.

1) Their margins are insane. I mean INSANE.

2) They do more volume than all the other companies you listed combined. ASUS, ASrock, MSI, etc. They didn't even do 10% of what the iPhone did last year.

APPL's market capitalization is 2.4 trillion dollars. Almost twice what Amazon's is. Think about how massive Amazon is and how much business they do. APPL is double that.

Apple's market cap is due to how desirable the brand is and the margins they get on their products. I can't complete a digital transaction without said company utilizing many of Amazon's service. Can't say the same about Apple. Comparing paper value of both of their stock, Apple may be twice that of Amazon, but in terms of the business they do, Apple doesn't compare with Microsoft much less Amazon.

You are aware that most of the money Apple makes comes from the app store? Apple do as much business as Microsoft and Amazon, they just don't do it the same way.

Clarity on what I posted. Unless Apple is selling 2 million apps & phones each day, your assumption is still wrong.

$3.6 billion as of 1st of Jan 2020, or $9,863,013 per day. That's just from apps. Doesn't include any hardware sales. Their revenue for 2020 was $274.5 billion, or $752,054,794 per day.

Who spoke about $ value of transaction? I already told Apple is a desirable brand with big margins. The 2million + figure is transactions that happen just on the Amazon Store daily.

You did in the posts I am replying to.

2020, Amazon had $280.5 billion revenue.

2020, Microsoft had $143 billion revenue.

2020, Apple had $274.5 billion revenue.

Claiming something like Apple has a $2.2T market cap due to them being a desirable brand and not because they're "not doing as much business as Amazon or Microsoft" is wilful ignorance in this day and age. Especially when it comes to publicly trading companies.

It's okay to admit that you are wrong about something. In fact, it's actually better to just admit you're wrong about something that just moving the goal posts for "what you actually meant" in order to say you are right.

I did not. I clearly mentioned that the only reason Apple has a market cap is because it's a desirable brand, along with their margins, the later of which you ignored.

In my later posts, I clearly said that unless Apple sells 2million + apps and iphones a day, Apple is smaller in business than Microsoft, much less Amazon. Which you ignored again.

But It's ok. For someone to ignore the key concept of "margins" and then construct a soapbox to argue in and then get on their high horse about how someone is wrong....I get that. Wouldn't have expected anything less.

FOCUS people, the thread isn't about how much money Apple makes vs Amazon, ect., it's about the companies supplying parts and building electronics having poor management @ the top and it effects the workers. These companies moved to India to A. get around tariffs from China,B.Get around the Import duty that India charges on all electronics."Assembling handsets in India enables smartphone vendors to avoid roughly 20% import duty that the Indian government levies on imported electronics products." In other words, your $1000.00 iphone cost $1200 in India if it's assembled anywhere but there.

The irony is that many of the Apple parts are produced by Foxconn factories that also produce a lot of parts for Apple's competitors. With price competition being fierce, it comes down to a functional international trade rule regime to stop 'lowest bid' manufacturers in the supply chain. Speaking of Foxconn and India...
