  1. It doesn't stop it from turning on, it turns on reliably but only from moving the lid and not from the power button at all. The customer only bought this laptop because the case on his other laptop is falling apart and I guess he thought that would be harder to fix but after talking to him about it he decided to order the parts for that laptop himself and he's dropping it off later for me to do the repair. Apparently, he moved here (CA) from Texas temporarily to do something related to rebuilding homes that burned down due to the recent fires so he is working like 24/7 since I assume he feels his work is very important. He probably thought the repair for his main laptop would take a lot longer, and normally I wouldn't order parts before having the laptop in hand just to avoid any mis match issues but since his work is demanding I walked him through finding the part himself so he can drop the laptop off with the part and the repair can get done quickly.
  2. I removed the battery and tried to turn it on with the charger plugged in and it didn't boot up windows, no video output. It turned on, but didn't boot and this was the only time the power button did actually turn it off when I held it down. After that it took a while before it would boot to windows again. Perhaps if I had persisted more before I reconnected the battery it would have eventually booted again and I could test that but this isn't the kind of battery that is supposed to be disconnected at will, it's under the bottom panel and connected with a cable directly to the mobo, and screwed in. I may try again though just out of curiosity... It's an interesting suggestion.
  3. I'm sure they'll make up the cost different on chipsets.
  4. From my perspective as a gamer who wins for high res over high refresh, Adler Lake doesn't interest me at all. When Ryzen 3000 came out it was just what we needed on PC to easily keep up with next gen console games. Adler Lake doesn't change that situation at all for me, and I'm sure it will be a long long time before a game come out that doesn't run well on Ryzen 3000.
  5. https://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/core_i9_12900k_review,12.html Not going to quote any text since all we want are the numbers.
  6. Intel's Core i9-12900K pushed to 8 GHz alongside overclocked DDR5 memory WWW.TECHSPOT.COM Intel’s Core i9-12900K is already a beast in terms of performance at stock settings, but that didn't stop... If overclocking was better than it's been in the last few revisions, that might bring a lot of gamers back over from the red side.
  7. Yea I checked that. I was also wondering if it could be some weird driver thing but reformatting didn't help. The bios has a battery health check and it says the battery is in excellent health. I also ran the Dell hardware diagnostic tool from the bios and it found no issues.
  8. Some more thoughts after reading more about this... Newer dell laptops have a "lid power on" option and there should be an option to enable/disable it in the bios. This laptop is basically acting as if this feature is on but the option to disable it is missing. There was an update for the bios from this year (laptop has an intel 7th gen CPU) and I did the update, still no option to disable lid power on.
  9. Another great day... This last week or so has is looking like a good rally. Hope it doesn't swing back too hard.
  10. So a customer brough me a dell laptop that he bought used. It works but the power button doesn't do anything. When opening the lid, the laptop turns on every time almost like opening the lid works as a power button. At no time does the power button do anything, holding it down does not force the laptop to turn off. I was thinking the power button itself was the issue and I was going to replace it but after running some tests I determined that the power button will turn off the laptop after I unplug the battery and reset the bios, but once it boots up fully the power button goes back to doing nothing. I read there are some laptops with a feature for turning them on when the lid is opened but I don't see any settings for that in the bios, and if that were the case I figure the power button would still work. I'm kinda at a loss here. My best guess is the motherboard has some kind of unique issue. Any thoughts?
  11. This made me really happy. I am so excited to fly a B-17 on El Alamein again!
  12. With the 2000 series there was a 2080, 2080Ti and a 2080 super. I suspect this new variant will be a 3080 super, but it will be interesting to see how it slots in. There was a big margin between the 2080 and 2080Ti for the 2080 super to fit into but that's not really the case here. Maybe the super refresh will be a more significant upgrade this time around.
  13. Yea maybe, that would be cool but I would hate to see this start a trend where next we see Hulu get into game streaming, then DIsney, CBS... etc. I've heard game pass streaming works pretty well but supposedly geforceNow is the best one. I think arguable it does pretty much work already, at least for people with good enough internet connections. Looks like game pass didn't do great in the tests Gamers Nexus did but I suspect people would get totally different results depending on where they're located. Long term it seems like Microsoft definitely has an advantage since they're in the server market.

  15. This is basically the same news as what's already posted here: https://forums.extremehw.net/topic/1622-nvidia-partners-told-to-prepare-for-ampere-refresh/?tab=comments#comment-19171 the info about the 3080 and 3070Ti are mentioned in the quote.
  16. Yahoo ceases service in China due to "challenging" business and legal environment WWW.TECHSPOT.COM Wonder if more companies will do the same in the future.
  17. Sega and Microsoft Announce Gaming 'Strategic Alliance' - IGN WWW.IGN.COM Sega and Microsoft have announce a gaming 'strategic alliance'. Sounds like Sega might end up making some MMO style games.
  18. Just a little success story; last week or two have been pretty good in general for most stocks, and I've definitely benefited. I also invested in a company called SOFI a few months back when they seems to have really dipped in a way seemed temporary and since then that stock has gone up a lot. Just between Friday and today I'm up about $700.
  19. Yea I agree. Long term though it could be interesting. I didn't know the two were still so close. Seems like Apple is really likely to end up with an anti-trust case soon, I'm sure that would shake things up a bit.
  20. Microsoft inches past Apple to become the world's most valuable company WWW.TECHSPOT.COM Apple late last week reported record revenue of $83.4 billion for the three-month period ending September 30, but still fell short of Wall Street analysts’ expectations of... Could definitely be short lived. I didn't realize both companies were hitting 2 and half trillion. Wasn't that long ago that there were no trillion dollar companies.
  21. More news on this: In January 2022 Nvidia would introduce the RTX 3070 Ti 16GB and the RTX 3080 12GB. (guru3d.com)
  22. I think this also fits the theme: Lorn is great for BASS and a deep melancholy vibe. Give me the BASS.
  23. Well it is Halloween... Sue me for the FLAC version I downloaded to replace the CD I bought as a kid...
  24. This is unrelated but seems like a good place to leave a quick note. I just noticed that all the news sections are labeled to be under "tech and science news" which makes it so that when you actually go to the technology and science news, the forum hierarchy works out like this: Home>Tech & Science News >Technology and Science I think the "tech & science news" part should probably just say "news" Side note, how about a section for video game news? I know that could fall under software but I think it would encourage more video game news if there was a section just for that if that's something you want here.
