  1. yay, moving on up... wish I had some more hardware to throw at it.... This guy... millions of points a day and comes in all "I have some spare hardware" meanwhile, I'm installing folding at home on my tv remotes and my wii U hoping for a little help lol... wondering if this gaming keyboard can help... it has RGB so that means it's fast right???
  2. well... mine should go up to over a million ppd average during the contest time ? I don't have a dedicated folding machine, but at times when heats needed or there's a contest going on I turn the minotaur loose and let it fold full force... so, yeah, I use my PC for space heater...?
  3. Hope you like laughing at ghetto/redneck rigs... my case is over a decade old and been reused to the point it's got more holes in it than swiss cheese... but they all serve a purpose even if for just air... the reason I don't change it has to do with air flow... this thing has great airflow and is quiet. ... anyway specs are : 3900x... I do use this for folding, get 250k to 350k ppd depending on the power limit I set. 5700xt Gigabyte gaming OC version 32GB 3200Mhz Gskill flare x cas 14 Mainboard is an old reused B350 TUF, originally paired with a 1700 cpu... even I can't believe it's holding up as well as it does, but I can OC to all core 4.3ghz with no problem so... not bothering to upgrade it just yet. as for storage... well... a 970 evo 250GB nvme for the boot drive, a PNY XLR8 2TB nvme steam drive then 1 of each 2TB, 4TB and 8TB spinning drives... (this is my media server with all my home videos and youtube stuff on it) Ok, now for the ugly mess of a PC.. oh, the PC's name is Minotaur... so if you are wondering about all the minotaurs... that's why.
  4. I've already got my wife's htpc rig started.. it'll take about 10 hrs for it to kick out it's first couple units... using it on both CPU and GPU part of the 3200G... figure that will give at least a couple work units a day there... I'll be starting my main rig up on CPU and GPU about 5pm local time (an hour before zulu midnight)... mostly because usually the first two work units I get are short running units it seems... @Avacado good luck friend, hoping your fix is quick and works for you.
  5. you could do what I do... and under power your cpu, well... I think you could... I'm pretty sure you could limit power to some arbitrary amount that will keep temps down... my temps were fine, even with power limits pretty much set to what the VRM's could handle, but I didn't like pushing the cpu that hard for days... I set mine to 65w and still net around 250k a day out of it....
  6. welcome aboard... I think you will find this place a welcoming, well behaved and informative site.
  7. I would love access to 2080ti's... but my poor 3900x and 5700xt will have to do... this computer is worth more than both my cars ?
  8. what?, no cpu slot?... guess it's busy feeding all those gpu's... with me about 1/4 to 1/3 of my ppd comes from cpu
  9. Ok cool... I'm no threat lol... even with my wife's PC going full blast... it's just an HTPC with a 3200G... the CPU/GPU combination on it can't hold a candle to my CPU alone.... it's crazy what PPD I see out of a heavily throttled 3900x compared to my old CPU's and hers.... makes me wonder how well the 5000 series does. I usually see around 250 to 300k a day out of my CPU, her system only nets around 65-70k per day as a whole
  10. accidental double post... sorry... well actually this was a post I didn't think went through because it was still sitting in the submit box... and I hit submit again later.
  11. well... I don't know if my son has joined up yet, but I was able to convince my wife to use her PC for FAH... but she wanted me to do it in my name, is there any rules against that in the competition... I don't think so, but thought I'd ask to be sure.... poor PC, it only has a 3200g, but it chugs along cool and quietly getting it's 66k ppd ? seems low
  12. just an example from ebay: clicky and an auction: clicky both are my exact card... and yeah, I can find some cheaper, but they are from less reputable dealers and overseas... so yeah, market place is needed here to help combat this stuff.
  13. at this point with the way GPU and CPU availability is, used junk IS treasure.... I paid 360$ or so for my 5700xt some time back... went to the same page and it was listed at 1399$... I think it's come down some since, but holy crap, I saw used ones on ebay going for over 700 with bids!... wish I had an extra one to sell.
  14. I'm am trying to figure out how to get more work units done lol... last time I had more points than a member who had nearly double the work units I had... so I am testing out dividing my cpu slot into two slots of 11 threads each, seems to be working so far, time will tell... maybe the same idea could work for the 5800x in getting more points since multi threading is better on the 2nd and 3rd gen zen. on another note, and more on topic, I am sharing this thread with a few family members, including my son who has a similar setup to me... he says he will join in... would really like to see this site grow, since it's better than the alternative... wonder if anyone over there has noticed I've been gone yet lol.
  15. I'm ashamed of how long I looked for the dark theme here before I realized there wasn't one... not a deal breaker, but I do work in a dark room...
  16. I know I love this site compared to how the other one went... they refused to listen to anyone and just made it like 100's of their other forums. Coming here for me was out of frustration as well... The only feature I really miss... dark theme lol.. but as you already have seen @ENTERPRISE is already on it.
  17. This room is on the "hot" side of the house with no shade and only a 6000BTU A/C... I don't even game in here during the day on summer days anymore... Back some years ago I messed up real bad and built an AMD FX system with two 7950's in crossfire.... that would push temps in here past 30C even with the AC on full blast... It's actually why I made this build the way I did, more cores than I need, but that way I get a better bin so I can get away with much less voltage and set a lower power limit. still get good multicore performance, and not loose any single core, but only at 65w... less than half what this chip on this motherboard pulls at stock settings... GPU I undervolt and lower power limit in the summer or when folding... of coarse when it's freezing cold like it's been, I do a one click bios profile change and a GPU power profile change and let the power flow lol.... But I digress, still, while I can, I'll be joining in on the folding team's competitions.
  18. a large competition... hmm interesting. Soon temps here will start warming up and I'll have to sit out these competitions, but for now I'll be joining in.
  19. thanks and it's my birthday today too so this makes it extra special
  20. last night before going to bed I loaded my power profiles for long term folding. CPU power limited to 65w GPU limited to 145w Current CPU tpf: 3m 42s Current GPU tpf: 1m 37s Wondering now if that could be improved with some other tuning to increase power efficiency further.
  21. nope, it didn't... This is why I don't usually talk anything politics on sites like this... I'm a bit of a centrist, mostly because I see both sides having hate groups, both sides posting crap like "punch a n@zi" or "stop the steal" and it always just makes things worse, no one wants to work things out peacefully because all people see on the news is the extreme ends of the spectrum... but since it's started, I'll throw out my view... Private companies can do what they want in this regard so long as it doesn't violate the anti trust law... section 230 is only supposed to protect public forum companies that don't take an editorial stance on their users content, like FB, Twitter, etc... unless you can prove AWS did either of those somehow then they've broken no law. I'm reminded now of the baker who didn't want to bake a cake for a certain couple... personally, for simple reasons of consistency, I have to argue that it's wrong to force a company to do business with someone they don't want to... that doesn't mean there won't be repercussions though.
  22. 1st off, Guys, I'm proud no one get stupid political over this in here... that makes my day! 2nd, I think Amazon will have repercussions from this that they didn't expect... a free market usually self corrects, unfortunately sometimes bad things happen along the way... still better than state/federal controlled version in my opinion, but it's just that, my opinion.
