The Great Tesla M40 Adventure "Projeckt T3sla"

Figured I would just start a post with all of my adventures moving forward with "Projeck T3sla". This will start at my last hiccup. I have added in a 2nd PSU and have taken apart and re applied TIM and new thermal pads to all 5 of the cards that will remain on air. I pray the system doesn't lock up from here on out, because the temps looks great! Low 20's c Idle. 

 

Small details:

 

- All 5 air cards "renewed"

 

- Running one of the cards of an M.2. to PCI-e 4x riser. Pretty happy with the limited results thus far. Before any card that was not in a 16x lane was getting 5.0GT/s bandwidth, now they are all getting 8.0, which makes me happy. 

 

- Though TDP is 250w on these cards, they rarely go above 200w. In fact 2 of my cards hover around 160-170w with the other 3 staying in the 180-190 usage area. Why some use more and some use less, I have no clue. 

 

 

 

 

Been working on this all day, pretty tired. Will tidy up the page and update more when I have MOAR energy.

The only thing that stands out is that the cards with the higher powerdraw have more memory allocated and higher memory load (F@H thread picture), that could be the reason.

Despite my best efforts, with my Asus Zenith Extreme x399 down (So sad about this) along with the 60 lanes from the 1900x, I had to resort to using the only other thing I had on hand, A Z390 w/ new 9900k. Now I tried every conceivable combination of 1x risers, M.2. to 4x risers, I could not for the life of me get the second rig to fold reliably with more than 3 cards, it just doesn't happen. I managed to get GPU-z to see 5 cards using the 3x16x slots and both M.2. to 4x adapters, but it was very unstable. Thing is, with 16 PCI-e lanes for the CPU, you are left with limited other options. I know that there are 8 additional lanes on the SB, 4x of them being used by the 3rd pci-e 16x slot, but again, despite my best efforts I could not get them stable. So, until I can get a replacement x399 board, the 2nd folding rig will only be using 3 Tesla's and the iGPU to drive video. 

 

I even tried adding a 6th Tesla to the working X399, but that resulted in the board actually not seeing 3 of the cards. With the GT710 and 5 Teslas, I think it's safe to say I reached the capacity of the board. Now, the board I have only has 1 traditional M.2 slot, which I am using, there is 1x Vertical M.2. but it is a different plug style compared to the risers I have. 

 

So I will be looking for an X399 board that has to have 5 PCI-e 16x slots. A care package from PPCs came today. 

 

 

 

 

And the above is why I NEED a 5 16x slot MOBO. There is a server board on ebay, I am probably going to get. I will be modifying one of my mining chassis to run the other 5 teslas under water. Really looking forward to that build!

I have 30 FT of Mayhems clear 10/16, and have another 30 FT of Tygon coming, will wait to see what works best. 

 

Iv'e got stock to choose from as far as RADs and tube res/pumps. 

 

2x Acool ST30 360,

1x Acool XT45 420,

 

2xAquacomputer D5's

1x Swiftech D5,

 

Handful of BP cylindrical res's. 

 

Just have to figure out what chassis I want to run with. I really think I will be modifying this mining chassis to my will. Iv'e already begun cannibalizing my meshify C. I have never modded a case before, I feel like I will create some abomination! we shall see. Once the extra 1.5mm thermal pads arrive, I can begin putting the 5 Tesla's in their swimsuits.

...slippery slope, that - caution. My most recent 'real' case for a new build was the TT Core P5 (love it), but heavily modded for E-ATX, 5x 360x60 rads, 4x D5s etc. Since then, I moved straight to abominations with my new builds, no more cases or test benches even as a pre-mod starting point 

 

...btw, love those Heatkiller blocks !

So I took apart the meshify c and am left with a test bench and 360 rad mount. I bought 2 external 360 rad mounts that I will mod on to the 2nd mining chassis for the 5 teslas going under water.

So I started putting on one of the waterblocks tonight and of course, the stock backplate does not fit with the block. So.. had to order 5 backplates all the way from Germany. Project on hold some more.  Another 200$, geez.

I saw some of these while I was looking on eBay last night. Do they use a CPU plug to power them?

Yes. Yes they do. One EPS 8 pin. Having gone down this hole, I can't recommend anyone follow who doesn't mind putting A LOT of time into tweaking it. I use 2x 8 pin PCI-e to 1x EPS adapters. 

 

If you WERE to try one, I could send you a power adapter and a 3d printed cooler for it, which is a must. I would even send it for free minus shipping. I have extras now that i'm putting 5 under water.

I'm just so exhausted trying to find reasonable GPU's to fold on. It's been 3 months of me trying to snag msrp cards with bot alerts, and now I'm messaging people on eBay trying to get something, and it's just not been going well.

Well, they are still some for 119$ on there. They were data center cards, so well maintained. They will put out about 1.1 million PPD. You will need 2x GPU cables to power the thing. I mean, I have had fun doing this project and it keeps me busy. But again, I have sank waaaay more money in this project than I thought I would. Buying one to have fun with I would support, but don't go crazy.

It's always the same, there is no going back now.. What was wrong with them that they didn't fit? Cause a drill and a Dremel fix a lot of those problems

True, Essentially the screws for the Block would not fit through the stock backplate. I could have drilled them, but did not want to ruin the stock backplates. I could have also found and bought larger screws, but ordering replacements, though expensive was easier. I know, but i'm old and I have the money. 

 

Those 5 Tesla's will be down for the next tourney. So you should have me.

I totally understand that, you can always get them in the original state if you want to sell them. And besides that, those backplates from Germany look pretty!

We'll see what happens, I hope the new workstation will be fully functional. It has been folding with 2 cards on risers and one card in a slot for 24 hours without an issue.

I know! So shiny! Best part is, the SLI portion will be exposed (It's not stock). I will be able to SLI 2 and Tri-sli 3, I even have a quad SLI bridge.

Friday proj3ckt updates:

 

Started off testing the ASRock X399D8A-2T and my 3rd TR CPU (1900x) as this was the first chance since I bought it them 2 weeks ago. Did not load windows, but everything appears normal. 

 

 

After confirming board functioning, I started the mining chassis mods.

Taken apart:

 

 

Concept design:

 

 

I had to re-drill ALL of the MOBO standoffs, as they were reversed. 

 

 

What kind of enthusiasts would we be if we didn't re-paste and thermal pad our GT710's?

 

 

 

Final concept, teaser board mounted with Summit BP block.

 

 

Will do more as the Tesla backplates arrive from DE. Thats all for now folks.

T-Storms projected all weekend. Mounted the D5 and res. QDCs on CPU block. The ST30s are soaking with blitz.
