...No problem !

Inching my way towards 20K w/ default driver settings in Superposition 4K with the 3090 Strix...probably have to drop ambient below 21 C to do it.

...updated some 5950X (lower right of Raven_A) CPU bench performance numbers; this thing is an absolute joy to play with, now that the 'daily tune' is locked in...but there's always tomorrow for some more tuning 😃

Some new pics of Raven_A and its nest 😃

@Bastiaan_NL ...per earlier chats, some pics of the new work corner after the internal move...getting it all in one shot (ie. dual system, adjacent 40 inch & 48 inch monitors) w/o fish eye was a bit of a challenge 🥴

  • 2 months later...

I haven't updated this thread for a while...in fact, I should probably do a 'major refit' of this build thread, given the fact that some hw has changed, and also some of the pics got lost over time as EHW had some updates. The prescribed method to get pics back worked in some cases, but not all...probably good enough reasons for a clean-up - but for now, below is a quick update....I may also do an album, now that everything is finished and humming along...

...well almost everything: I updated bios for Raven_A (2x mobos) and Raven_B (2x mobos) and also switched some RAM around...as a result, additional options for the 5950X system RAM have opened up (3800 CL14 to 4000 CL15). A new setting has also tested out w/o issue, and that is the 3966 CL15 'tight'....It will likely come down to either that or the ultra-tight 3800 CL14 (please see below)....the old 'latency vs. bandwidth' trade-off. The 3950X RAM on the other hand is a simple 'no-brainer', per below.

Overall, I am very pleased with the outcome and performance of the Ravens' Nest builds. Rather than thinking about another build (already have some parts for a new Intel project), I am just enjoying the performance of these setups - for example, in the Shadow of the Tomb Raider bench I just tried out for the first time last night, both Raven_A systems have performance to spare...even at 4K / highest eye candy settings, the min frame rate for both exceeds the max of the respective monitor refresh rates. Also, media and play is smooth w/o hitches and stutters, and very quiet re. fan noise etc.

I already mentioned in another thread how impressed I am with the C1 48 OLED that is powered by the 3090 Strix / 5950X - not just in games, but other media consumption. Now that I have had that combo for the better part of a year, it just doesn't get old, instead it still surprises me with its visuals. As a result, my earlier plan to look at VR for that combo is shelved, probably for good...

Thank you for the update.  Very nice tuning while still holding to your rule regarding vSOC 👍.  I am eager to find out if Agesa 1207 is actually going to change anything for the "original" Zen3 chips or not.  At the moment, I'm betting not, and that's okay.

...Updated the bios for both X570 mobos in Raven_A and after testing Win 11 Pro re. legacy software for productivity (worked fine),  both systems are now running Win 11 Pro for good. I also mounted a new Seasonic Prime Platinum PX 1300W in the 5950X setup, matching the newish Seasonic PSU in the 3950X. The Antec HPC 1300W, which was powering the 5950X before is close to ten years old and started to show some droop on select rails. The new Seasonic doesn't deviate by more than 0.1v idle > full extended load (on both systems) 😀.

I also connected the 3950X/ 6900XT GPU to both the 40 inch and the 48 inch monitors for simultaneous display via a 3 meter certified HDMI 2.1 cable - works great...lots of desktop real estate to enjoy.

I think I read in thread over at OCN this was to 3801?  I assume you have already read that beta bios 4201 with Agesa 1207 does not undo the 1.425v cap with EDC>140?

...yup, I'm a bios and OS luddite and finally decided to update Raven_A's two systems to 3801 and Win 11 (because Win 11 needed a bios update). Raven_B's two systems still run Win 10 and Win 7 Pro, respectively  👀 ...and btw, yes, Win 7 still does get major security updates.

Thanks. More performance for less CPU package power is nice as it lowers temps and leaves more headroom. Sooner or later, I'll bump the CCX speeds to their known max for another few runs in DynOC, but the current DynOC combo is great as it still has the CPU and L3 show over 5 GHz effective when gaming / using apps that mostly stress one or two cores. All the while, mild negative CPUv offset and lowish base voltage keeps things nice and cool.

....yes, 4x D5 (across two loops) is enough; besides I needed an extra D5 for another project. Speaking of which, I made a collage of my last 4 builds to decide what style I want to go with for a new build (early 2023, when all the new stuff is out - and v/bios de-bugged ). The CM Stryker (bottom right) was the last time I used a 'normal ' case, since then, it is either complete custom-fabbed frames, or using TT Core Px products as scaffolding for heavy modding since it will be another dual-mobo project. Also thinking about a giant '4x2' wall project 😬

...here is the map of the 'case' fans (so excluding actual water-cooling fans) to cool things like the backs of the two GPUs which have huge extra heatsinks and also the VRMs & RAM on the mobos. Normally, I would build w/ exhaust on top but given the unique layout and mods of Raven_A, this has proven to be the best arrangement. Even with 27 C ambient, all temps stayed low.

...fiddled a bit more with a few more optimizations and unlike the Cinebench R23 score of 32,439 above which is near max on water for this particular 5950X chip, below is my new 24/7 daily 'summer' setup, complete with a small undervolt and utilizing the DynamicOC function on the Asus DarkHero. Under load, vCore is around 1.18 for all-core, and to get almost 32k in Cinebench R23 at just 210W CPU package power (max I've seen before in full battle dress is over 260W) is great - and reflected in temps as well. At this rate, the new 7950X can wait a bit 😊

For what you'll have to spend for a new board, ram and chip I totally agree. Your system doesn't get slower when new stuff comes out.
Those results at 210W is impressive, I wonder what I draw when I'm playing around but it's never something I look at as long as it's not overheating 😄

...yeah, there's no magical slowdown upon release of a new CPU (though current GPUs have experienced some funny stuff with new drivers for next gen - looking at you, NVidia 👀 ). The speed on both Raven_A systems is good enough that I rather wait until early next year before planning any HW upgrades...I really like to first find out more about GPUs, ie. both the 4090 Ti and the rumoured XTX7900 (mGPU with up to 48 GB, 24k cores).

On CPU, Raptor Lake 13900K looks decent but it apparently is just a stand-in due to Meteor Lake being behind schedule. The 7950X >> AM5 socket on the other hand is supposed to stick around for a few years. Bonus: AM5 will accept my specific AM4 w-blocks (Phanteks).

...since I stopped my HWBot activities, no need to hurry re. buying the latest gen...🤑

I updated performance collage of my 5950X - CH8 Dark Hero with two new HWInfo effective clock runs from today. On the left, L1L2 prefetch off, on the right L1L2 prefetch default. Using the Dark Hero's DynamicOC for daily now.

Looking forward to seeing what you can do with the 4090. Be sure to see how it stacks up against the competition in our 3D Speed Way competition over at overclock.net!

...first order of the day is to get a water-block - and so far, only an overpriced EK block is out there for my card. My earlier EK 'adventures' nixes that one, for now...hoping for Phanteks, Alphacool or even Bykski. The card is a great clocker though on air (over 3100 MHz already), but air-cooling this monster works for gaming, not for benching...76.3 billion transistors in 4 nm node concentrate heat  🤪

Still working on finding VRAM max (most efficient), doing it in 100 MHz steps.

Wow, you sprung for a 4090 eh? Really impressive clock for air. I wonder what you can get out of it with waterblock. I heard unlike the 30-series which was power limited that these cards are more voltage limited.
