Tucked into the executive order that covered 72 initiatives to promote competition in the US economy, Biden specifically asked the FTC to crack down on “unfair anticompetitive restrictions on third-party repair or self-repair of items, such as the restrictions imposed by powerful manufacturers that prevent farmers from repairing their own equipment.”
 

The order is a significant win for the right to repair advocates who have long championed a consumer’s choice to have their technology fixed either by third parties or on their own, rather than solely by the manufacturer. Right to repair argues that anyone should have access to the OEM parts, manuals, and software needed to perform those repairs. Major gadget makers have lobbied to prevent this kind of repair accessibility, but the right to repair movement has been picking up momentum in recent years.

Well it is certainly about time this got some heavy traction.

It's really only phones that are a problem repairing....or specifically Apple.  But then you can go to any phone repair kiosk in the mall and have a screen replaced on an iphone.

 

You can buy parts to just about anything if it isn't too old from https://www.ereplacementparts.com/ and https://www.repairclinic.com/ with video tutorials.  I've bought parts to fix my furnace, washing machine, dryer, lawn mower, string trimmer and a Bosch SDS hammer drill from these two places.  Plus you can buy parts from manufacturers.  I repaired a Ridgid sawsall with parts I bought from Ridgid.

 

The US has had the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act since 1975.

not just Apple,some Chrome books also had proprietary wifi only they could replace.If you replaced it with a different 1 the bios wouldn't recognize it.

Chromebooks use Coreboot, which is open source, as it's "BIOS".  There is no "right to repair" issue associated with the software.  It's only limited to what someone decided to add.  Since it's open source, there are modified versions available.  Also Chromebooks are Linux, not all Wifi adapters have had drivers released by the manufacturer or been reverse engineered by Linux developers.

Microsoft surface is considered unrepairable. Because a battery replacement cost as much as the tablet and fee hardware shop repair them.

 

Phone problem are common we need more law like that.

 

Like the LG G5 GPS issue that was never fixed.

But is being difficult or costly to repair related to "right to repair"?

 

Do we want our devices to be portable?  Or do we want to go back to these days again?

Seems like a step in the right direction. But we also need Title II with local loop unbundling. So i hope he pushes for Title II next.
