Leila Character, Doctoral student in Geography, The University of Texas at Austin College of Liberal Arts  7/22/2021:

"In collaboration with the United States Navy’s Underwater Archaeology Branch, I taught a computer how to recognize shipwrecks on the ocean floor from scans taken by aircraft and ships on the surface. The computer model we created is 92% accurate in finding known shipwrecks. The project focused on the coasts of the mainland U.S. and Puerto Rico. It is now ready to be used to find unknown or unmapped shipwrecks."

The Research Brief is a short take about interesting academic work. The big idea In collaboration with the United States Navy’s Underwater Archaeology Branch, I taught a computer...

Pretty cool, I wonder if this could eventually be used to find aircraft remains as well.

Very cool indeed. I see no reason why this could not be adapted within reason to find anything. All it needs is the initial training which is what they had to do in order for it to carry out the detection of sunken ships. The applications are exciting.
