First time I've heard 2023, seems entirely plausible though.

I reckon this is a true statement. Considering where we are now in late 2021, 2022 will be the year of backlog and trying to recover. 

 

Im thankful that my need to upgrade right now is nil.

My too. Upgraded both my PCs around the time the ryzen 5000 series came out and got some used 3000 series CPUs right around the time early adopters would be upgrading from 3000 to 5000. 

 

When I got my ryzen 3600 it was $160 used. Now the cheapest one I can find used is $210, almost a 25% increase for a used part in just ~ 6 months. 

 

I initially upgraded my first PC to a 3800x and didn't really plan on doing my second PC yet, but from looking at parts for my first PC I noticed it looked like prices were going to go up so I did my second PC right after and I'm glad I did.

I also upgraded at Ryzen 5000 launch. Fortunately as I was hot on it, I was not caught out and got the CPU at its RRP which ironically was £666. After that there was literally no stock anywhere. My CPU on places like Ebay were going for £1000+ it was nuts. Same applies for my EVGA 3090.... fortunately due to a kind member I was able to get one at RRP as they were in the queue but no longer needed the position. Well we all know how prices went with GPU's.

 

So yeah, I managed to squeeze in and buy right before stick hit zero and prices went insane, all pure luck.

Now you can get Ryzen 5000 series CPU's for less than MSRP at Microcenter and during a sale on NewEgg.  I want to upgrade but if I can't get a GPU at MSRP, than what's the point.

I have been tempted to upgrade.  I have a machine running one of the first batch  Ryzen 7 1700s with the segfault bug.  I never RMA'd, so from time to time I hit the bug.  That machine mostly sits on my test bench.  The bug doesn't come up too often, but every time it crashes, I have to determine if it's a real crash or the faulty CPU.  

 

Too bad I also need a new motherboard to run a 5800x, which is $370 at Microcenter right now.

I'm still using my 1700x with the segfault bug.  I'm not using Gentoo anymore, so it doesn't affect me as much.   I already have a new mobo and 64GB of DDR-4000 that I bought last November.
