Nameless LGA 775 build

Needs moar Samsung WonderRAM.   Man, I miss those sticks.  Those Mushkins should be pretty solid too though.  Timings are meh, but RAM is RAM really.  DDR3 systems can still keep up on daily and gaming tasks with DDR4 systems, so really doesn't matter that terribly much.  Of course if you're shooting for benching, you'll eventually want some tighter timing sticks, but yeah those are going to go very nicely on that setup!

Beautiful build man. LGA 775 is where I also got my start. E8500/9800 GT was first full system I ever built. Had done RAM and graphics cards prior, but never a full system.

It has been nice building at a relaxing pace. Build is halfway completed. I debated for awhile about putting the RAM under water, but decided against it. I should have plenty of airflow from the openings on the testbench and flow from the RAD fans. I did give the Copperheads some love and restored them to pristine condition.

Halfway picture of build. Still have to connect the other 240 RAD and the GPU blocks. Trying to make it in a way so that the CPU and GPU's are modular and can be hot swapped.

That is something I've been wanting to do with my Athlon XP 3000+ chip (Barton core). As that was the first one that really inspired me to start overclocking.

You should totally do it. Building older systems you couldn't afford when they were new feels great. It's also fun touching back on early overclocking. TBH, I had all but forgotten how to OC FSB etc... The pictures are long gone but if you want a laugh you can look at some of my older threads on OCN.

I love parts, I have a mini PPCS in the dungeon. If you can't find what you need to build, repair or restore any computer part in my basement, you shouldn't be working on a PC. Building setups and loops is my favorite part about computing.

Thought the photo was lost on OCN, but it somehow reappeared. This was the Antec 900 Q6600 TT build that got me into OCing. I think the card is a 8800 GTX.

So the x5470 was a no go. I tried so hard to install the microcode. BSOD's immediately when I managed to get into windows and multiple MOBO error beeps. It just did not want to let me do anything with it. Settled on the QX6850.

 

I have never seen - temps on water before!!!

So, is that HWiNFO64 and or the MB being wonky?  I ask because I was disappointed in the readings I was getting from the "ambient" temp sensor I installed for my current pet project.  I ended up using a digital meat thermometer from the kitchen to track ambient while making my bench runs (and opening and closing the window in my "laboratory" to maintain as constant a temp as I could).

It really is THAT cold in the dungeon. Though I suppose it could be an error. I am guessing the loop temp would have to be that low as well and it's not I have it setup in the dungeon (Basement) the dungeons ambient temps were in the 20's when I took that screen shot. Both windows are open a tad to help keep temps low and Radon levels at bay. 

 

I have some Acool digital temp display/probes. I can hook them up later and find out the real deal.

Starting to creep up the 10x multiplier. 9 and 11 give consistent errors. Vdroop is MASSIVE on this board. I have to set 1.575v for 1.5v idle. It drops even lower when benching.

Dude, that's like legendary Kentsfield clocks there.  Most Core 2 Quad Kentsfields tapped out at 3.6-3.8 if you had a GOOD one.  Dang.  I remember seeing a few people hit 4 with their Q6600's and Q6700's, but it wasn't very many.  15 years later and you're at 4.1....... just wow!

Yea, it wasn't stable. I could probably get a CPUz bench run in, but thats all. I think i'll be able to run this at 4GHz 24/7 which I am pleased with. I bought a second QX6850 that I plan on delidding and having some fun with.

Yeah I remember, vdroop was a huge issue on this platform.. some improvements for the digital VRM boards but they can be tricky to find.

Update:

 

I have never corrupted an OS before this build. Apparently experimenting with different OC's corrupted win7. So much to the point that I can no longer use the SSD it was on despite using CHKDSK and DISK PART. I have ordered a bunch of 256GB variants and will re-install win7 on it this weekend. I am done OC checking and will leave the system at 4.0GHz 24/7 moving forward. 

 

Once I am up an running I have some older games only on CD/DVD rom that I am looking forward to playing again. 

 

I will also be acquiring a second EVGA 790i through a current ebay listing or Samsrulz. Will be cool to have 2 of these boards.

Forgive my ignorance.  Just to make sure I understand fully, the disk will be useable again after being "wiped", or it is FUBAR in perpetuity?

FUBARd. I deleted all partions and volumes and formatted/cleaned the disk. When trying to re-install win7, it sees the disk, but puts up an error saying it can't be installed. I don't have the exact error code (At work), but when researched it just says to do what I already did. I hate to throw away an entire MX500 drive too. =/

NVIDIA 790i SLI Data Corruption - Solved?

Maybe just stick with a higher rpm(7200)hdd and take the loss in performance over the possible drive loss? Seems a mech drive may be more recoverable?

Thanks for the article, it was a good read. Appears that the issue happens at 400MHz FSB and Memory OC past 1600MHz. So I will re-image when I have time and keep the FSB at 400 and RAM at 1600. I had been pushing past 400 and 1600, so that explains the corruption. Glad to know i'm not going crazy here.
