I think this is the first time I’ve had to hop on a call with PR to ask “So… which intro sections were real and which were in Unreal Engine?” What followed was a conversation where we went shot by shot and outlined what is real and what is “Unreal.” That scene from Neo’s room in the first film? Unreal. Some Intro shots with Keanu? Real.

 

The visual results are ultimately a mix. For the majority of the time, you can tell the demo was made in Unreal Engine 5 But in those first few moments where you’re questioning everything, it’s clear Epic is showing off. It is a testament to what they managed to accomplish that I even had to have this call. But while the introduction probably showcases some of the most difficult to distinguish moments, from the time Carrie Anne Moss comes on the screen forward it’s all clearly Unreal Engine 5.

The tech demo does not look that bad, though something is off visually that I do not like and I cannot tell what it is. I think the visuals look OK but not the best they could, whether or not this is because the tech demo is on console makes a difference, time will tell.

Imo the upscaler make it's looks a little weird..  that plus the demo runs with a green "matrix filter" that can be turned off in the open world part of the demo. Everything looks a little grainy, I wonder what resolution it's rendering at in the action scenes. I suspect the resolution gets pretty low at times. 

 

That said it's running with ray tracing GI and reflections on a console, and the reflections are pretty clean. I suspect with either a little more optimization for the engine or slightly paired back visuals, games will get some really good usage out of UE5. 

 

One thing the demo definitely does do well is show off how a game looks when there are basically no visible LOD shifts.

Unreal Engine has always been very flexible. I would imagine on PC and after some additional optimizations, the visual fidelity will improve even more. Yes the green filter always seems a little odd, been a while since I watched the Matrix ...so I am used to seeing non green filters haha.
