Forum are slowly dying. That was the only forum i knew that talked about High end Gaming laptop and was browsing it for the past 10 years on and off with new laptop release.

That is a shame, curious why they decided to shut shop. Certainly a few factors I can think of but a shame nonetheless!

I have to admit I am not up to speed on laptop/netbook orientated communities/review sites, was notebookreview the only one ? I know they were the big boys on the street.

Nah, seriously though its an absolute shame they went under.  This is a pretty big hit for enthusiast forums in general.  Yeah, it was about laptops, but a LOT more people use laptops than desktops honestly.  I can't imagine it was for lack of traffic, shoot I visited them pretty frequently myself.  They were regularly linked back to on other places too.  You know they had traffic.  I'm not HUGE into laptops myself either, but I'm sure we've all been on their site.  *shrugs  Sucks to be them, EHW is where its at anyway.  Nobody else does the like E's sites do.

NBR is where discussion on eGPU setups for laptops first originated. I don't remember if I had an account there, but I got a fair amount of valuable info there trying to get my Lenovo ThinkPad T500 working with an ExpressCard-based GPU dock and my old GTX 560. I never really got it fully working before I got my ThinkPad W520 which had the Quadro equivalent of the GTX 480M. Anyway, the eGPU discussion got so in-depth that it actually spawned a new forum on another site.

 

There were definitely some good enthusiast DIY projects documented at NBR especially considering you would think laptops don't have that much going on for them in terms of modding and customization, so it's sad to see that go.

 

I was doing more reading on Reddit prior to buying my most recent laptop and there are some S-tier idiots in some of those subreddits. The quality of discourse wasn't comparable to a place like NBR, but there wasn't as much info or discussion on NBR for the Eluktronics RP-15 that I eventually bought. I didn't realize stanning for garbage laptops could be a thing, but there was one guy who polluted every AMD laptop thread in a couple of subreddits proclaiming the thermally-terrible 2020 Dell G15 SE to be the best AMD Ryzen 4000 "gaming" laptop. No, it really wasn't, not by its benchmarks nor its specs, and its materials and build quality were below par even for Dell. This is the sad state of long-form discourse to succeed enthusiast forums.

"Site" I only own the one...thus far lol. 

 

Do you think they will just close it and lose all that info or allow it to be consumed by another site ? Seems like a real waste.

I don't know what the financials look like on forums these days - I'm more so in the YouTube/Amazon side of things. I'm sure it still wasn't an easy decision. To me it seems like adsense revenue would be low and text based forums would rely on affiliate programs?

 

It seems like the consolidation of where people go for information has had an impact as well, facebook, reddit, and YouTube though NBR was seemingly quite large. Perhaps you could work out acquiring the data or operations?

Saw a post that someone was backing up data before the shutdown.

 

No idea if they are gonna revive it but could be an idea to attract them here.

 

So much content about /bios mod/mxm gpu upgrade/etc where on that forum.

It's been years, but I went through a few laptops by way of what was posted in the notebookreview forum. The last one I bought, a Lenovo W530, was purchased and fully decked out by me in 2012, and is still purring away on my desk. 

 

Shame about that forum being shut down.

I am indeed investigating this avenue as I feel such a wealth of knowledge curated over years shouldn't be lost.

Good news. The prior owners of NBR have replied to my query and we are talking.  My hopes are that this leads to a positive outcome.

I am sad to say that while we made contacted with TechTarget and started talking about the possibility of acquisition, communication was halted after I asked for metrics in order to come to an evaluation. It seemed they no longer wanted and what they had to say, and I quote......

Which is a funny concept, as if I thought it was a waste of time, why would I make contact ? This is your typical email which just tells me they do not want to state specifically why they are backing out, but want to make sure I feel good as they were not "Wasting my time", placating at its best.  So anyway, I let them know that we were disappointed that they were (to my current knowledge) just allowing the NBR community and all its knowledge fall into a black hole. 

 

I know that some of the information was scraped from users on reddit I believe and arguably you can use Waybackmachine to check archives, but not exactly the same.  

 

Sorry guys, was hoping for a more positive outcome.

Bummer on TT's part.  You'd think they would at least be interested in merging the site with like-minded sites.

Honestly, I think the owner(s) of the company reached a point of not caring a long time ago and they finally reached a point of not wanting to maintain it. If you look how many years had passed since their last product review, it is obvious that their focus had shifted to IT services. I do not believe they placed any value on the community that was built over nearly two decades of active collaboration.
