Microsoft could be on the verge of forcibly upgrading Windows 10 on your computer

Recommended Posts

Don't mind me, I'm still on 8.1 Pro. 😀

Well I know Mac was on "version 10" for what, like 2 decades? All I know is it hasn't force updated my work computer and my work is not really controlling it much. I'm still on some MacOS version from like 2018 that is fully unsupported now. Don't know why Microsoft feels the need to force update really. Haven't they already gotten their money? Here's an idea, quit removing features I like.

If PC repair was my main gig I'd be sad about all these windows improvements as they'd be costing me repair fees, but since I've long given up on that monetary chain... I see lots of evidence that MS has drastically improved security and OK with that.

Why is it the almighty Microsoft that has the final say on what MY HARDWARE does?  It's NEVER been a thing before Windows 10, and it SHOULD NOT be a thing now.  It's my hardware, not Microsoft's.

I was reading through the post again and ran across this and I remembered the issues with certain AMD cpu's not being able to install windows 8.1 64bit after buying and installing the Windows 8 64 bit version because Microsoft had added the requirement for NX "Only the Socket AM2 based AMD processors (and greater) support the necessary CMPXCHG16B instruction set to allow the 64bit edition of Windows 8.1 to install and run.  The older Socket 754 & Socket 939 editions of AMD CPUs can't handle 64bit Win8.1 and a 32bit version of Win8.1 would have to be used instead." Just like older Intel cpu's were shut out. So, it's not really something new, just them forcing their views on people which they have the right to do because we,as a group agree to use the software.

Maybe if we feel it's being TOO dictatorial we should switch to the fair open OS of Apple? 🙄

Part of the issue is that these days MS virtually gives Windows for free (we all know why) and with that being the case l, I think some of the mentality is, "Did you pay for your Windows 10/11, no ? Well then you get no say"

I have to say, to some degree, I get it.

I've read the running arguements before about forced updates.
If something is being forced, it's being forced.

You, the user and owner of the machine has had the choice whether or not it happens taken away from you meaning you have had some control over your own machine taken from you.
You can dress it up, put lipstick on it and it's still a pig because it is what it is underneath all that.

I have followed this entire Win 10 debacle from the beginning and have seen alot of things along the way I knew was coming right from the start of Win 10. Promises of it being the last version  - I already knew MS woudn't hold to that, esp when the option to not update was eliminated from the OS with later versions of it. Not too long ago, the thing about it being the last version also got snuffed. It's like MS speaks out of their mouth and then does the opposite of what they say.

I still recall where I was working before having to retire the nightmares the IT guys had when Win 10, via it's forced updates decided it was time for another round of it.

They had already had problems before with the equipment getting borked because of it, stopping production.

I recall one particular time it was supposed to be an update that was going to change alot of things and take some time to even do because it was such a large update, forcing the equipment to be offline during this process.

Well, you try explaining to the boss all that while he's livid over it because corporate is on his back about production being shut down - Good luck with that.
And the IT guys coudn't do jack except deal with it.

I solved all my Windows problems back when Win 10 first came out by switching to Linux and that's where I am now.

No forced updates that changes/erases settings and preferences, nukes drivers for stuff and other assorted crap. I mean like it or not - Eversince Win 10 came out you, the user are the BETA tester for each and every update and change they make and that in turn means you get to deal with it.

I'll keep control over my machine, not have these updates crashing my stuff, not have all the wonderful telemetry (Spying) that's baked in reporting directly to MS and other things.
No OS is perfect and that includes Linux but for me it's been a better and a smoother experience than Win 10 has been for so many along the way.
Only negative about it is gaming and even that is beginning to change these days.

It's definitely come a long way on that front. I'm still not quite ready for the switch though given some of the games and stuff I use.

Wish I could say the same.  Last time I tried Linux, probably within the last year or so, it was a great experience.  It just still wasn't QUITE there yet.  Several games still didn't work, I still couldn't map a network drive without command line, and RDP doesn't work as smoothly on Linux obviously since RDP is Windows proprietary.  I could overlook some of the games if the networking was a little easier and there was a decent RDP system in place to remote in with a desktop like experience that RDP provides.  I've tried others like Teamviewer, and the experience just isn't the same.

I don't really care about updates and haven't for many years. I'm still running Windows 7 with only the absolute bare necessity updates for functionality... Things like kernel mode driver framework and SHA signing and NVMe, etc... only what it needs to function. I'm also running Windows 10 LTSC 2019 and LTSC 2021, both with no updates. The Redmond Reprobates can kiss my posterior. I'll do it how I want when I want and I don't care what they think about it, LOL. I've been brushing up on my Linux skills in case the day comes that they no longer have a product worthy of being installed on my hardware. It seems like that might not be too far off in the future. Windows 11 already fits that description... digital feces.
