You’ll need a Microsoft account to set up future versions of Windows 11 Pro

Now that Windows 11's first major post-release update has been issued, Microsoft has started testing a huge collection of new features, UI changes, and redesigned apps in the latest Windows Insider preview for Dev channel users. By and large, the changes are significant and useful—there's an overhauled Task Manager, folders for pinned apps in the Start menu, the renewed ability to drag items into the Taskbar (as you could in Windows 10), improvements to the Do Not Disturb and Focus modes, new touchscreen gestures, and a long list of other fixes and enhancements.

But tucked away toward the bottom of the changelog is one unwelcome addition: like the Home edition of Windows 11, the Pro version will now require an Internet connection and a Microsoft account during setup. In the current version of Windows 11, you could still create a local user account during setup by not connecting your PC to the Internet—something that also worked in the Home version of Windows 10 but was removed in 11. That workaround will no longer be available in either edition going forward, barring a change in Microsoft's plans.

Sigh, knew that would be coming. Not a fab of being forced to use an MS account or having to have an internet connection for something as simple as setup. Is it me or is MS copying lots of Apple type moves.

So time to switch to Linux?  Yeah, time to switch to Linux. :lachen:

I voluntarily sign into my MS account right now for the purpose of using OneDrive, which I don't really WANT to use anyway.  I still use a local account on my computers.  I WILL NOT sign into my email just to use a computer.  Period.

I suugest using Mint since it's very much like Windows in how it is.
I'm currently using Peppermint but believe it's a dead Linux version, the guy that was heading development for it passed away at the beginning of 2020 and there have been no new releases of it since.
It really bites too since Peppermint is alot like Windows itself and it's a good version too.

I'm guessing the game franchises they've bought recently will also require a MS account to play.

Of course they will.  The games that they already have go through the MS accounts.  Minecraft you can't even use your old Mojang account anymore, they make you convert to a MS account now.

Well that usually is the case, not like you can play Valve games without a Steam account.

This is definitely annoying though. To reinstall windows on a customer's computer with this requirement, I would either have to leave the setup at the part where credentials get entered which means any setup after windows fully installs would be left up to the customer, I'd have to get the customers Microsoft email credentials or use a temporary Microsoft account and then convert the PC to a local account after setup, if that's even possible. It's hard to see the logic in this move. Luckily its only windows 11 and only the pro version.

Well that settles it, I will only use Windows 10 if I still need windows. Not being able to install Windows 11 offline and the inability to create a local account is just a deal breaker now.

Can't wait for the time I'll need both Steam and whatever M$'s launcher is being run at the same time in order to play a game heh. Sort of like how I need both Steam and Uplay to play any Ubisoft games now.

A much sadder fact than needing a Micro$lop account to set up future versions of Winduhz 11 is that there are people that will. The tolerant sheeple are to blame for this. Their brainless compliance is the reason bad products and the bad people offering them prosper.

If it can get on facebook and twitter........then yes, the mindless masses will eat it up regardless.  Sad state of affairs when OS installs are now at the point of being dumbed down and requires an internet connection just so it can phone home to Microsoft.

Edit:  Corrected my accidental misspellings of certain companies. 🙂
