Outside my budget range big time, but wow.  AMD just keeps stepping it up with their CPU's.  This would be killer for server usages, assuming you can get enough PCIe lanes.

Was wondering when Threadripper would get a refresh. Did Zen 2 Threadripper have 12 and 16 core SKUs too? How would these compare to the 5900X and 5950X respectively? Is it just the additional RAM support and obviously much larger amount of PCI-E lanes?

The current Threadripper Pro 3kxyz (as opposed to the regular Threadripper) also has 'low' core count SKUs. The gen before that, the 'regular' Threadripper (Pro didn't exist then)  also had 12 and 16 core models (I still have the latter, a nice 2950X). These new ones, ie. 5995WX, have the Zen3 related core, so IPC etc from the 5950X...they will be absolute monsters, at least until the Zen4 core based versions arrive with DDR5...

Another vendor locked CPU launch.

 

Hopefully there is a release for consumer SKUs, so anyone that jumped on WRX80 can at least get one upgrade.  Looks to be the final nail in the coffin of the HEDT platform, unless AMD pulls a rabbit out of their hat and releases some non-pro Threadripper 5xxx CPUs.

I agree - vendor-locked launches are  , even if said vendor (w/ HQ in China !) does all the software app certifications. In any event, one of the reviewers was apparently told by AMD that by June/July, the new 5000WX chips will be available to other vendors, probably at $$$

The early days of TR were awesome but HEDT is on the decline and I think we are going to see TR for the server market only and vendor locking will become more of a thing, even though like you guys said....Vendor locking is yucky.

...vendor locking (ie. Lenovo, per below) is truly annoying, and somewhat reminiscent of the situation preceding 'right to repair' legislation, IMO...
