Google has forced YouTube Vanced to end, just over four years after the service started. Reputedly, Google threatened YouTube Vanced with a cease and desist, and asked it to remove all references to YouTube. Existing YouTube Vanced installations will not be affected, though. 

The team behind the YouTube Vanced app has announced its discontinuation, a few days after its fourth birthday. To recap, YouTube Vanced allowed people to block all adverts on YouTube without subscribing to YouTube Premium. Additionally, the app includes an AMOLED dark mode, Picture in Picture, returns the dislike button and contains numerous customisation options.

........And this right here is EXACTLY why Youtube is banned off my smart TV's and my phone devices.  If I can't block all the incredibly intrusive ads, I'm not watching.  I tried, one time, recently to watch an episode of my beloved Mighty Car Mods, and I swear it was like every 15 seconds an ad just had to pop in and interrupt what the guys were saying.  I might be exaggerating a bit, however I seriously did lose all sense of what the show was even talking about because of the ads.

 

I had no clue this apk even existed!  I might give it a look and archive it locally before it disappears entirely.

The Vanced team claims that the reason is they were asked to refrain from using the YouTube name, which they've continued to do for years for some dumb reason.

 

I have Vanced on my phone and tablet and I'm sure there will be third-parties that will re-upload the last version of Vanced and MicroG for quite some time. The developers might also grow some functioning brain cells and fork the project with a new name that doesn't include any Google trademarks. Another alternative is NewPipe, and Google has shown no indication of going after them.

Obviously Youtube/Google has motivation to shut this sort of stuff down, but I heard that Vanced (apparently even jokingly) attempted to sell a themed NFT and that's what did it. Probably wasn't the best move since that suddenly directly involves money.

I posted about that in my comment originally, but then I removed it after seeing the Vanced team claim on Twitter that the NFT was not the reason. I don't know whether it's true or not because they could just be in damage control mode right now. Either way, they're lacking in street smarts as far as keeping their operations under Google's radar.

Yeah exactly. Unclear on details but the fact that we're talking about it as a possibility isn't really a good thing for them.
