Voyager is one of my most memorable shows from back then since it was still current when I was a young teen. That wad the show that turned me into a trekkie. Still can't bring myself to sit through TOS though, when I see how the women had to dress in that show it makes it impossible for me to take any of it seriously and just makes me think of the fact that Roddenberry was a cheating horny old man despite being a great sifi producer.

Agree, I grew up with Star Trek TNG re-runs and Voyager while it was running. I didn't get into DS9 until an adult. Also watched lots of classic 90s Simpsons and Seinfeld came on after. As a kid Seinfeld was just funny because of Kramer, growing up, I got more of the jokes.

 

As for commercials, I remember this one from when I was a kid (apologies ahead of time)...

Speaking of Star Trek, have any of you guys watched any of season 3 of The Orville? So far it's been really good. I think it's better than Strange New Worlds, which is just OK.

 

Picard and Discovery really lowered the bar so much that at this point any new ST show just has to be OK to feel like a big success. I think if Strange New worlds had come out after Voyager and DS9 ended instead of Enterprise, it would have gotten a similar reception to Enterprise, maybe worse. Strange New Worlds feels like a pretty goofy show far too often, and other than the episode about the comet being a technological religious thing, there has hardly been any unique plots, everything is kinda a rehash of old ideas from older shows but with a somewhat more goofy cast. I could rant about this for a long time...

 

The Orville by comparison started out with Seth Mcfarlane's usual comedic brand, but season 3 has been anything but funny. It's dead serious and they have actually come up with some new plot ideas that are deep and interesting.

Been meaning to catch up on Orville. I didn't get far past the pilot of Discovery and Picard season 2 is an abomination.

 

I really enjoyed the first couple of seasons of The Orville and also heard season 3 was more serious. Looking forward to it.

Watching the newest episode of the Orville today and I realized this is by far the best Star Trek show to come out since DS9 and Voyager ended. The writing is truly impressive. Just so funny to me to see this show hitting such high notes and making actual Star Trek shows feel cheap and lazy by comparison.

I need to get watching on season 3. Voyager looking back was not great, but entertaining. DS9 was masterful in it's storytelling and character development.

 

My only experience with new Trek series was Picard which was an utter travesty and I couldn't make it past the pilot of Discovery.

Can't deny that DS9 is the most epic of them all, but they all have different flavors. TNG is the most true to form, and the most basic. It gives us the flagship perspective which goes into some bureaucracy at times. DS9 is the war story, darker and more epic and packed with action and drama. Voyager focuses more on individual characters and their development over time, with almost every character growing a lot throughout the show. I don't think I have a favorite really because they all do a good job covering different ground. I like the nuanced character development that Voyager brings to the table. The Doctor is a great example. 

 

But yea man, you really should get on season 3 on Orville! If they keep this momentum, it might even surpass DS9 eventually.

"how the women had to dress"  have you actually looked at what the styles WERE at the time the show was being made? Don't blame Gene for following the current fashion trends.

Yea I dont get mad about it, but it's dumb. There supposed to be essentially like military personnel on a space ship but the women all look like a 1960s secretary. 

 

Gene Roddenberry was notorious for the way he treated women in his personal life, and not in a good way. I see the outfits as kind of an extension of that. It's just very awkward after starting on trek with Voyager.

His personal life and the show are 2 different things. This was Women in the Military at the time of filming, so keeping with the current fashion(mini skirts)he kept it realistic....

There's a big difference between the below the knee outfits in real life and the mini skirt style dresses in TOS, but it's hardly the only reason I haven't watched it. It's also just hard for me to get into a show that old. Still, I think the decision to make the women in TOS look the way they so is completely contrary to how they are in every other ST show in which they are treated as equals and not objects.

TOS was first, so it's the new shows that are contrary to the original, not the other way around.  The shows were based on the times in which they were created.

It's not really one or the other, just a matter of perspective. They are contrary to each other in that regard, but like I said it also has a lot to do with it just being well before my time and it's hard for me to enjoy shows that old. 

 

I like the characters from TOS and I think the Kirk movies are probably better overall than the TNG movies, just the TOS show itself is too old for me, but I definitely appreciate it for being the thing to start the whole series of shows and movies. 

 

Rick Berman is largely responsible for the different look and feel of the shows from TNG to Enterprise and I think most people agree that was the height of Star Trek. Gene Rodenberry died I think between seasons 2-3 of TNG and Rick Berman took over. Most people consider seasons 1 and 2 of TNG to be the worst. Some of that may be growing pains for a new show, but some may also have been the shift in top management. 

 

Rick Berman was not without fault in his personal life either. I think he dated Jeri Ryan during the making of Voyager which caused a lot of tension for everyone involved, and it's obviously a big conflict of interest but when it comes to the shows, I think he did a great job of building of the formula Rodenberry had laid out and refining it to its best form to date.
