Twitter Could Start Charging $20 a Month for Verification

Just a few days after taking over Twitter, Elon Musk has given employees the first ultimatum, and a rather strange one at that. Musk wants to introduce a new 'feature' that simply means paid verification and if that feature is not introduced, the team working on it can be fired.

The directive here is to change Twitter Blue, the optional $4.99 paid subscription into a more extensive offering that also has a verifying option for users. According to people familiar with this situation and the internal correspondence seen by The Verge, Twitter could start charging $19.99 for the new Twitter Blue subscription. Under the current plan, verified users would have 90 days to subscribe to Twitter Blue or lose their blue checkmark.

Might see a few less blue checkmarks.  Cool.  I don't support greedy practices, but I don't support all the stupid blue checkmarks thinking they're the only voices because of that checkmark either.  This one's kind of hard to comment on, because I dislike both. -_-

I kinda agree with the more "professional" point, but $5 to $20 is a bit of a hike for the small time (as in single person)business clients.

I seriously doubt Musk will be able to improve twitter in any meaningful way. You can't be pro disinformation information and have the goal of getting rid of bots because bots and disinformation go hand in hand. It feels like he's going to turn Twitter into something like truth social.

Elon Musk already faces pushback from celebrities, lawmakers, and advertisers worried about Twitter’s changes.
  Quote

Referring to the man who attacked House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband this week, she said, “He was posting antisemitic tropes, he was showing memes that showed violence and all of this election-denying, pro-Trump, MAGA-crowd rhetoric. That’s what we’re dealing with here…I just don’t think people should be making money off of passing on this stuff that’s a bunch of lies.”

Noting that TV networks have to screen commercials for false information before they air, she said companies like Twitter do not face similar requirements.

”We have to change the requirements on these companies,” she said. “They’re making money off of us. They’re making money off of this violence.”

Meanwhile NBA star LeBron James tweeted yesterday that the surge in N-word use on Twitter since Musk’s takeover was “scary AF,” and added that he hoped Musk “and his people take this very seriously.”

That followed the Network Contagion Research Institute—a social media research firm—reporting that use on the N-word spiked 500% on Twitter in the 12 hours after Musk took control.

Antisemitic memes also jumped, and so did the word “plandemic”—shorthand for a conspiracy theory in which elites are using the pandemic to gain power and profit off vaccines—according to Dataminr, which also analyzes social media, Bloomberg reported.

Plandemic is a propaganda misinformation film series.

EN.WIKIPEDIA.ORG

The last thing the world needs more of right now is misinformation. I really have no words for anyone who thinks Twitter, or the internet in general, needs to be making it easier for racism and misinformation to spread. The fact that those things have already jumped up so sharply on Twitter with Musk in control can only be a bad thing, and anyone who is in favor of it is frankly a disgusting and ignorant person.

Maybe I'm partly guilty of mentioning the more political side of this myself, but I think this thread is going to devolve into bed territory from here, therefore I am going to lock it.
