GPU sales at lowest point in a decade

Just a quick point out, My first "expensive to me" video card purchase was my MSI GTX 970 4g at a cost of about $350 plus tax. My next upgrade was an EVGA RTX 2070 XC Gaming for $550 plus tax, when released the RTX 3070 from EVGA started around $550 MSRP BUT couldn't be found for under $600 on their site even today (despite Nvidia lowering the MSRP of the 3070 to $500) Given the fiasco of the 2 4080's and the smaller brothers un-launching and apparent re launching as the 4070Ti (Gigabyte has already filed the models they're making of it https://www.techradar.com/news/nvidia-rtx-4070-ti-gpu-could-arrive-soon-but-at-what-cost ) Who KNOWS what the actual cost of a RTX 4070 will end up being? But my point is that we can see a steady increase in price, but it JUMPED with the 3xxx series because of Covid related issues(supposedly) and now they're keeping the prices right up there.  Oh BTW, the 1070 from EVGA was around $430 to $450 so you can see an increase of roughly $100. Note in the included screenshots that the current listing for NEW EVGA 3070's show they are selling for $100-$150 more than the 2070 I bought new even though the 4xxx series has started to release.

$719 for a 3070 in 2022...what is EVGA smoking?

Yeah this was my other point. The top end raising in price as a "halo" product has brought up the whole stack with it.

...per below, I just checked RTX 4090 and RTX 4080 pricing and availability at caseking.de 'December 1' (> European, pls note that EU prices include a sizable sales tax). No 4090 models at all in stock, but six different vendor 4080s, some of which are getting their first discount. The GPU market is heavily segmented, and pricing depends on competition in each segment, as well as buyer 'demographics' (ie. per above, 4090 has multiple demand curves).

...in a few months, we should see some more 'true' pricing, with AMD's next gen entering the market. Intel might just turn out to be the great blue hope for mid-range to upper mid-range.

I'll tell you what the outrage is. I killed my 9900K the other day and was looking for a replacement, did you know they are still asking over $500 for it new? You can get a Ryzen 9 for under $600.

That's not surprising depending on where you were looking. I go to Newegg or something and look for a new, old product and the pricing is outrageous. Same with Amazon.

True, but paying more than MSRP for something new that is four generations old (Four Years Ago) made me do a double take at the screen.

Just buy a used one. The 9900K you had was already used and now it died. A replacement used CPU for a model that's already 4 gens old is perfectly reasonable, more reasonable than buying new IMO.

Hmm on second thought, after looking at prices for a used 9900K, they're still quite high at ~$300. You could get a used 3700x and a new B550 motherboard for less than $300.

What are you going to do to replace the 9900K?

I've got a similar problem trying to locate an additional TR 2950X or TR 2970X for an extra mobo we have as we are about to switch to a newer gen - so the backup board for the previous gen can go into light-server duty now. New old stock pricing for those isn't quite as bad as with your 9900K, but still, it's annoying to pay more than the original purchase price.

I also noticed that my X570 Asus DarkHero mobo has gone up by about 15% in one year.

I noticed this too with the Dark Hero board. I think it was $420ish when I got it, then saw it hit $450 and then $500. Looks like its coming down a bit in some places (Newegg and Micro Center shows $449).
