The used GPU market: What to expect (price analysis)

I spend a lot of time on ebay looking for and buying used parts. I figured I'd put together a list of what the current prices for common used GPUs are since the GPU market is so whack.

Each GPU will get a cost per frames score based on Shadow of the Tomb Raider (raster) 1440p benchmarks found here. The cost per frame number will be rounded and include approximate tax and shipping fees.

I made these two charts to show the current used market landscape, and compared it the 4090 and 7900XTX.

You can see a few trends; like AMD being cheaper per frame, though this would probably look different if we were looking at RT performance. There are also some cards to be avoided, like the 3060, 3070 Ti, 3080 Ti, 3090 Ti, 6500 XT, and the 6750 XT. With the exception of the 3060 Ti, on the Nvidia side there is a price premium for any Ti card compared to it's actual performance even in the used market. For AMD, value stays flat in different tiers for the most part, with the 6500 XT and 6750 XT being outliers.

If I'm reading that graph correctly, looks like the RX6000 series cost per frame is the lowest?  Neat way to look at things! 🙂

Over all, yes for the most part, but particularly in the low end and with a few exceptions. The 3060 Ti is very close in value to the RX6600 - RX6700 XT. In the mid/high end, the 3070 has a slightly better value than the RX6800 and RX6800 XT.

Yeah.  Those are very interesting results.  So 3060Ti or RX6600/6700 (depending on budget).  And then 3070 at the higher end.  That's not what I would have expected at all, but that's kinda neat!

Not shocking. 6600 XT has been the go-to 1080p card I think with the 3060 and 3050 being terrible value to performance by comparison. As for higher end, I think the 6800 XT, 6900 XT, 3080 still make the most sense.

Anyway, is eBay the only factor in these graphs as far as the "now pricing", because I can get a 6950 XT right now for the same price as a 3080. (in the $700s).

I based it on my experience with ebay, so some of them might be the lowest "buy it now" price, or some might be a little lower than that (plus tax) if it seems like there's a lot of availability, meaning sellers are likely to accept a lower offer. A lot of the "but it now" listing accept offers and usually they will accept a lower offer if it's not far off from what they're asking.

If you can actually find any in-stock FE cards. I believe those deals are FE only.

FE only, I was tempted with that 3080 price, they were already sold out.  But hey, some Ebay sellers are offering a "Discount" if you buy more than 1! (at $559.99)  They also include a nice note:

Quote

Literally not used yet, I ordered too many lol. No original box as I can’t find them but I’m still looking. There are no returns. Just too many scammers

I really want the scalper market to go down in flames.

On ebay, the RTX 3080 10GB models are averaging between $475 & $575 before tax/shipping. Problem is most are mining cards and some look a bit rough.(1 actually had rust) And most don't even state they were used for mining, guessing on the fact they have multiples for sale.

Just a minor update to this:

I've thought about making updated charts but the prices have actually not changed much at all. I've bought maybe 10 or so GeForce 3070 GPUs at about the same price over the span of about a year and a half.

Same has been generally true for the used CPU market. 6 months ago I sold a Ryzen 3600 on ebay for $60. Last week I sold one for $70.

With the exception of cards that had just come out when I made the charts and have gotten official price drops since, things have barely changed. Seems like inflation and high prices on new GPUs is keeping the used market unusually stable.

On a side note, Newegg's prices for their used cards now more closely match what you find on ebay.
